WHEN THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
YOU HAVE TO SET YOURSELF ON FIRE
The mother of the Descartes family died a decade ago and life hadn't changed much since, other than the house being a little quieter and emptier than it had been in their slowly fading early childhood memories. Only now has change found them, their father suddenly and unexpectedly marrying the recent widow of the incredibly wealthy and illustrious Antoinette family, aunt to the District's most recent Victor, Cricket Antoinette and her sister Halcyon. Now the Descartes children have gone from lower middle class to upper crust elite overnight, moving across the District into the home of their new step-siblings, who have been taken just as off-guard by the marriage of their parents, while dealing with the still achingly-recent death of their own father.
Baptiste has always been a bully-type, but now his new financial/social status has made him feel like he can get away with anything he wants. A sociopath, he actively lures people into trouble every chance he gets, usually for no other reason than his personal amusement. Sarcastic smartass with a deceptive smile and a backwards kind of charm, not to mention the greatest eyebrows known to man. He's made too many deals with the devil to have close friends anymore, but falling in with the Antoinettes has made him too untouchable to be socially damned by his peers. Now he's just a wandering lost soul, aimlessly lighting up the night with a flashlight and the click-click-click of Morse code threats for bad intentions that the unlucky people he encounters only seem to decode once it's too late.Descartes // Phoenix
(Male, 16 (older or younger than Firebird), ? FC) [Meghan]
Was an outcast at his last school, growing up quiet, nerdy, and brutally unpopular. After moving across the District when their father remarried, he decided to end his old life and make himself over into a new person who might be wealthy, social, attractive, and loved by all. Rising from the ashes of his old self, his new classmates are none the wiser about the type of person he used to be... his only fear now is that this life too might be incinerated one day. Treats the Gumiho like a new rolemodel.Antoinette // Djinn
(gender, age, FC) [OPEN]
Like most Antoinettes, the Djinn has very little concept of money and spends it too freely. Charitable. Enjoys making other people's dreams come true by simply doling out a few coins, but gets taken advantage of for it sometimes and used by people whose wishes are purely selfish. Frequently buys presents for the Descartes siblings to win their favor and is easily tricked by the Will-o'-the-wisp.Estella Antoinette // European Dragon
(Female, 16, ? FC) [Tango // POTENTIALLY RE-OPENING]
Believes the Descartes family is unworthy of joining with the Antoinettes and suspects that being poor runs in their veins. Resents the new siblings and is highly suspicious of them, always trying to peek in the pockets of their coats and such in an attempt to catch them stealing. Attempts to act as a guard against them, trying to protect both the wealth of the Antoinette household and their social standing. Gets along well with the Chinese Dragon despite this (pretty must against their will/idea of better judgment), possibly harboring a small crush.Lisse Descartes // Chinese Dragon
(Female, 15, ? FC) [Loren]
Bright-spirited and incredibly lucky. Always seems to be the one to find lost money on the sidewalk or to guess the correct answer on tests they forgot to study for. Fond of the weather - aspires to be a meteorologist and finds amusement in predicting when storms are coming, an ability that seems to nag at the European Dragon in particular, who finds it fascinating and is secretly convinced the Chinese Dragon might be a little bit psychic.
Ruthless Career who likes to brag about cousin Cricket, the Victor. Frequently visits graveyards and the graves of fallen Tributes, as if their bones are old friends and reminders of what not to become. Extremely strong and cunning, almost as though ordinary weapons have no power against them, but is easily plagued by ideas of doubt others whisper.
Ridiculously gorgeous and a total man eater, flirting and toying with hearts as a way to manipulate people into doing what she wants. It all started as a rumor that she had slept with a classmate when she was younger and the story became so wide-spread that she stopped bothering with denial and took ownership of it. The truth that no one knows, however, is that this supposed shameless whore... is actually a virgin. Her true nature has become a secret now that the promise of her body is a form of power and her true devotion will only ever be won by someone who learns her secret... and keeps it. Enjoys hate-flirting with the Will-o'-the-wisp as part of a scheme to break up her mother's new marriage, but enjoys it less when he pushes back at her own boundaries, digging for the secret his sixth sense for trouble knows is there.Lyulf/Leah Descartes // Firebird
(Genderfluid (biologically male), 16 (older or younger than Phoenix), Lee Chi Hoon FC) [Anzie]
The Firebird is always losing something... usually on purpose. A feather, a coin, a playing card, a scrap of old homework — little things. It's not the object that matters, but the owner. In the end, The Firebird hopes to be what is truly found, leaving a trail of hints that might lead an interested person back to the one who "misplaced" such things. The Firebird has always felt overshadowed by the other Descartes — and now also Antoinette — siblings and wants to find a friend willing to jump through a few hoops in the name of getting to know one another. These habits often wind up looking incriminating in the end, however, and while the Firebird was always an easy scapegoat to blame for the Will-o'-the-wisp's antics, now the European Dragon has also found a convenient suspect for any possible "thefts" around the house.Mama Antoinette // Kitsune
(female, 37, ? FC) [Nyte]
Wealthy heiress/widowed housewife. Having married young (at 19), the Kitsune has forgotten how to live her life as anything other than a faithful wife and mother. After her husband died, she took to visiting his grave daily — where she met the Salamander, who was also in the habit of frequently visiting his wife's less-recent grave. Bonding over their mutual sorrows, after a while the Kitsune employed the Salamander to put her finances in order, a blatant excuse to meet with him outside of the graveyard. Now, each day, she still visits the grave of her deceased husband (if only for a moment), but each night, she returns home to sleep in the arms of her new love. With the age of passing years comes a quiet wisdom (motherly advice that she often attempts to share with the Descartes children), just as a long life instills a desire not to be alone.
Widowed accountant. His body is covered in subtle birthmarks, as though his skin were scattered with stars. He's often accused of having a cold personality, but that's mostly due to how life has forced him to adapt — throwing him into the flames of difficulty and loss and forcing him to find a way to crawl out and start anew or to hold his ground and die. It's hard for him to form new bonds with people and so the Antoinette children often have a difficult time understanding what their mother sees in a man who struggles to show them the kind of warmth he only knows how to share with his own children and new wife, although he's trying... and, more often than not, failing in the eyes of his step-children.
Please note: All characters in this plot are based off fire myths (this is a sort of D2 sister-plot to the water myth concept of the Libertines in D4). Genders and ages are flexible and will be decided as the characters are given out. Descartes FCs MUST be Asian; Antoinette FCs aim more towards French descent. The parents may be applied for, but if there is no interest, they will be treated as NPCs. People may pitch me ideas for addition Descartes/Antoinette siblings, however, the current list is priority.
BTW: Last names may wind up being hyphenated as Descartes-Antoinette or Antoinette-Descartes, if people want? Or maybe simply changed to one or the other if one of the parents officially adopts a set of step-siblings? (Descartes if they follow the the tradition of the wife taking the husband's name or Antoinette to preserve the social status of the family.)
