"And it was just the most lovely shade of red I ever did see! Why, I immediately found myself thinking: Ophelia! Now, wouldn't this be just the very best thing for making Cora's un-birthday dress?" It's something of a talent, talking with one's mouth and hands at the same time, not to mention the added challenge of properly articulating my words with several sewing pins held in the corner of my lips, forgotten in a fleeting instant of enthusiasm, yet always ready at a moment's notice. "But even with the fabric prepared, it did require rather a considerable amount of thought and planning to sort out hem length and the precise number of ruffles there ought to be."
If only my school teachers were here now! Surely not a one of them would question my multitasking abilities ever again. In fact, I should think even Professor Speks would be so impressed as to compliment me particularly. Only, I'm certain I would get so flustered up in response that my mouth would run right off, my hands chasing after, but ever-so-slow without the usual help of my feet. I can't imagine that I would ever manage to catch up to myself at that rate and — oh! On second thought, I'm terribly happy that he's not here to witness, no matter how impressive I am!
"Two ruffles seemed to be too few, but — goodness! — four was a dreadful sort of too many. Three, however, is such a tidy number, in my personal opinion. I should think all things would be much improved by being ordered in sets of three. Just imagine it, Mally —" By this point, I can't help the way my thoughts are flipping over each other, one jumping away from me as quick as can be to make room for the next. Really, it's very polite of them to keep stepping out of one another's way so as not to cause some sort of accident. That would take rather a lot of the amusement from the whole affair and what with all the tea and treacle Dinah and I prepared for Mally in order to convince him to help today, I don't think any of us would be very pleased by that particular turn of events. "— an extra sock so one lost is never really lost, triple chocolate cake —"
As it is, despite being just the two of us, this already feels something more like a party than simply preparing for one — a one hundred and seventy-eighth day un-birthday party, to be exact. At least so long as I'm remembering the number correctly, but I suppose for all I know, Chestibor might have said seventy-eighth and one which could be added up to seventy-nine or if it were un-one then he might have meant for us to go backwards and after that I really cannot remember at all if we're counting up or down or —
"— three day weekends, or how much better we might hear if we had several ears rather than just the two. I mean, think of how much more of everything there might be to listen to then! But I do suppose that might not be such a very good thing after all, to hear everything. Everything can be rather a lot, you know. But still —" Pausing my thoughts, I turn to knock at my own bedroom door. Ordinarily that might be considered a very silly thing to do, were Mally not changing into the dress I've been sewing all week as a present for Cora's aforementioned upcoming surprise un-birthday celebration, so I can fit it properly. "— don't you think three is just such a particularly nice number of ruffles to have?"
