Winnie woke with a start. No it wasn't possible. She paused. Yes, there it was again, a kick within her. She felt fear course through her as she looked down at her stomach. There was definitely a little bump there. Damnit, Drew, I thought he used protection she thought furiously. Her father would hit the roof if he found out she was pregnant. Her hands went instinctively to her stomach as tears began to prick at her eyes. She had too much of her life left to be pregnant. She laid back on her bed and buried her face in her pillow. She didn't want to be pregnant. Her dad would kill her. She was sixteen for crying out loud, she was barely old enough to learn how to drive, let alone be a mother. She placed a hand on her stomach, a wave of protectiveness washing through her, stronger than anything she'd ever felt before. It was a motherly instinct, she knew. It was the instinct that had driven her mother to protect her from everything and the instinct that made all mothers want to be the best they could for their children. Images of a little bundle wrapped in a blanket in her arms played through her mind. Perhaps, being a mother wouldn't be so bad. Unfortunately, she knew her father would hit the roof.

She cried into her pillow, feeling fear course through her. She was afraid, afraid of what her father would do. She dried her tears as her cell phone rang and she looked at the display, Drew. You have explaining to do she thought, answering. "Hello?" she said, keeping the crying out of her voice. "Hey, babe, what are you up to this afternoon" her boy-friend said. She bit back an angry retort. "I don't know, but I need to talk to you about a few weeks ago" She said. He paused. "What's wrong, babe, I thought you had fun" he said, sounding confused. "I did, it's just the outcome of it, I don't like. I'm pregnant" saying it was like a slap to the face. She felt tears begin to fall down her face and he remained quiet. "Stay where you are, I'm coming for you babe, I won't leave you alone" He said, hanging up. She sat there feeling numb as his words sunk in. She wouldn't be alone. She felt the tears dry up and she fell back onto her bed. At least I won't be alone she thought, smiling.

She wrapped her house coat around her and padded down the stairs as she heard the doorbell ring. One of her avoxes answered and let her boyfriend in, she heard the footsteps scuttle down the hallway as they retreated and she finished walking down the stairs. Her dad was out thankfully, giving her a chance to talk to Drew alone and he regarded her with a warmth she'd only seen a few times. One time had been when they'd slept together. She smiled softly at him and he approached her, pulling her in for a gentle kiss. As he let her go, his hand moved to her stomach and she blushed. "Our child will be beautiful, just like it's mother" he said. Winnie blushed, feeling her heart flutter like it usually did whenever she and Drew were together.

They sat in silence, not needing any words as they sat there, her head resting against his shoulder and his arms around her waist. She smiled, feeling content and warm and safe, wrapped in her housecoat and his arms, it was as if nothing would ever happen to her. She closed her eyes and let herself fall into sweet oblivion.
