Pecking Order [Family Feud] {D11} (wip but OPEN)

I hate that airhead Kenneth. He's got the whole wrong idea about my family, and he's the whiny flake that's put my reputation on the line. It's no wonder we're in the middle of a feud, that scumbag is more infuriating that he's worth. All because of one mistake almost thirty years ago. Now we're tied into the middle of this cold-war situation. It's only a matter of time before he and I are brawling in the streets... again. What a twit. If he had just left things be, maybe I wouldn't think he was such a twit. I only slept with his wife once, not my fault she managed to get pregnant. Evelyn's a nice girl, I really don't know why she ended up with a bugger like Kenneth. Anyway, to explain how this whole thing started.

I knew Kenneth as an acquaintance for a few years, we worked together and ended up talking. Looking back at it I suppose we were friends, but we are anything but now. I was already with Irene then, but Kenneth was only just meeting Evelyn. I got to know her as Kenneth did, and there ended up a love triangle of sorts. Evelyn and I both had silently agreed that she would go with Kenneth as I had Irene. When they got married it was just the two of them and even if I was invited I couldn't go for fear that either I or Evelyn might say something. By this time Irene was pregnant with our first child, and I couldn't say I loved her any less. I didn't want to hurt her with something as foolish as loving another woman.

But when Altair was four I was overtaken by the desire to spend one night with Evelyn, and the opportunity arose when Kenneth had to work the night-shift. So I went over to their place and Evelyn and I made up for not being together. I left for home at some time like three in the morning, and Irene didn't question when I slid into bed beside her. I had worked the late shifts a few times lately and it wasn't unusual for me to return later than one. I didn't find out the cost of my visit until nearly three months later when Evelyn told me she was pregnant and gave me a look that told me it wasn't Kenneth's. She had started showing signs, but she had waited until then so it would seem natural that she was telling Irene and me.

It wasn't until Monal was born that Kenneth found out that he wasn't the father. When he did, he stormed to our door and near busted it down with his knocking. Irene, not knowing what was going on, grabbed Altair to keep him from opening the door. I told her I would get it and went to see what I could do about the situation. I tried to get him to explain why he was here, though I had a pretty good guess, and he went and punched me. I knew that he was no longer a friend of mine then.

Yeah, I fought him. He opened the door and tried to feign innocence and I punched him. We fought on his doorstep for a moment until he knocked me down and we rolled away from the front of the house. We didn't do serious damage to one another, that time, but he ended up with a limp and I came back with a shiner. Whatever kind of friendship we had had was gone now, and I vowed he would never see my family again or he was going to get worse than a bruised kneecap.

I suppose that that's when the feud started, but what made certain that it started was when Walter came to see his my son. It didn't help that he spoke to my wife, and I snapped. I threw him almost literally from my house and once more we fought. This time I managed to break his nose, and he broke his own hand punching the asphalt of the street we rolled onto instead of my face. I ended up with a knee to the groin and yet another black eye. My knucles were also bruised, but I definitely came off the better of the two of us. Glaring at him the entire time he walked down the street I waited until he was gone before i hobbled inside to wash myself off.

Trouble really started when his boy started to take an interest in my girl, but we soon both made sure that would never happen. I could not allow my daughter to marry an unfaithful man like any Shrike would surely be. That was when Monal got into a fight with his second oldest, Fulton or whatever, and a shove ended up in him breaking his arm. I knew then that it was a true feud, with each generation taking it on as a fact and not just a thing of the past. Altair never fought, though I knew Monal had goaded him enough that he must have wanted to. It's the only bit of credit I can afford that family, and even then it chokes me to say it.

I can't explain what kind of logic this world has, but it seems that I always manage to run into one of them wherever I go. It's frustrating, as though I can't ever get away from them, and it takes a lot not to confront Walter because it would seem like a scheme of his. I have managed to notice my youngest daughter hanging out with Altair's boy, and though Altair isn't the worst of a bad family I still don't trust a Shrike as far as I can throw them - though that boy is so skinny I might be able to throw him a lot farther than I trust him.

Feuds, they're taxing but this one has a reason behind it. I'm protecting my family while Walter never seems to want to leave us alone. It's all I can do to hold him at bay so my poor Evelyn doesn't have to worry about him coming around and bothering her. I swear, I will break more than his nose the next time he sets foot on my property.

Old man Shrike, the starter of the feud and the one who is the most strict about what it entails. He was the literal cause of the feud when he slept with Evelyn Wren and got her pregnant. Currently he has a son that is half-Shrike and half-Wren, but he is internally torn as to whether to claim him as family or not. On the outside he refuses to mention his Shrike-Wren son and doesn't let Altair or Irene talk about him either. Tough on his kids, but softer on his grandkids, he can seem like he is always grumbling about something. He and Irene had wanted to not have kids so they would be able to escape the Games, but when Irene became pregnant with Altair they knew that they really had wanted kids all along.

Matthew Davis

The oldest son of Irene and Walter Shrike, and a firm upholder of the feud. While he isn't plotting horrible things like his father he does agree that the families should stay away from each other, if only to help things become a little more peaceful. He's noticed his son getting close to Aderyn Wren and has attempted to warn him off, knowing that it would be somewhat of a repeat of history if things continued. As one of the few that actually knows that Monal is actually a Shrike-Wren, he keeps quiet out of loyalty to his father and the wish that the whole thing might just be forgotten.

The thought of a feud excites him, and he's always itching to find a reason to defend the Wrens. He's tried to pick fights with Altair but the older man had turned him away. Once, though, he managed to have a scrap with Fulton, which both boys got yelled at by their respective parents for.

She has become close with Efron, and they have spent a couple nights together after sneaking out. On one of these nights she became pregnant, but nobody knows of it yet - not even Efron as the father.
