MATTHEW DUNHAM
"You have successfully completed Phase one of your training." The grey hair man, who happens to be my fathers right hand, concludes when he presses a stamp onto a sheet in a folder, that has my names printed on in in bold letters "MATTHEW DUNHAM".
As I watch the ink dry I can't help but feel a little proud. What I feel even more is eager to move on since I spent the past weeks doing everything down in the factory hall, that everybody else didn't want to do. All the carrying around of supplies, taking out trash, pushing part after part after part through a testing device. It wasn't much fun.
"Im eager to move on to stage 2." I smile at the man and he nods at me. "I know, Matt."
He gives me a bit of a weary look because he is very well aware of what's to come.
"You're moving on to the drawing board, Matthew."
Over the rim of his glasses he looks at me.
"I know." I reply just like he did before.
"Yea, but you also should know that this is your dad's speciality. You'd better do well. Put your whole ass into it."
Of course I know what he's referring to. My father has been twice as hard on me than any other intern because he wants me to excell. I don't always do well with that kind of attitude.
With a thank you I get up and walk to the door.
Outside I take a deep breath while the smile returns onto my face. The woman on staff at the big visitor desk in her pretty dress casts a glance at me and for a change I reply with a smile.
While I'm still busy looking forward to me new assignment somebody taps me on the shoulder. Instinctively I flinch and spin around just to come face to face with somebody who looks very familiar. A second later things klick into place: It's my grade school friend Beau, who I haven't seen in a few years. We didn't really leave on friendly terms either.
"Could you tell me how to get to room - um - B.. 24?"
I don't think very long and hard about my actions, maybe I should be more reserved but today is a good day so I hug him.
"Hey, what are you doing here? I haven't seen you for...6 years?"
