"High expectations seemed to run in their genes, Severn definitely expected a little more out of Hades and Terry even if they biologically weren't his. Fertility wasn't exactly his expertise (like most things), but his ex-wife had her plans without him. It wasn't quite a secret that she was cheating, as Severn was talented at discovering the tiniest of details (uncompleted training to become a peacekeeper teaches you a few things). Bringing up the fact that the woman he trusted, trusted somebody else the same exact way was out of the question, Terry was their child after all. Astrea told him not to bother looking through the DNA tests, but oh well, what was the harm? A lot actually. An infertile man couldn't have a child, so where had Terry came from, and how did she have a second on the way? Obviously she had seen other men, it didn't take Severn being a genius to figure that one out. Even if he helps that he was one.Codeword: odair
Of course, a desperate person in a sense would have done the same, pretend not to know. Astrea was one of the only things he had left to look forward to in the morning. Becoming a peacekeeper hadn't held too well, she talked him way out of that and it was far too late to even attempt to become a victor or die trying fifteen years ago. Yet, Astrea decided it would be best for herself to leave to the capitol for whatever reason, (the lame note had beenlost or thrown away or ripped into tiny pieces or soaked in tears), not even able to take after her own children. They both knew they weren't his, but they were stuck to him nonetheless just like Severn was to her.
He wasn't the ideal man to be a single father, even if Terry never being a very loud child and Hades quieting down after going through his younger years. They never did understand why their mother hadn't been around, Severn never knew quite what to say because honestly, he didn't know why she did leave. He never told them that she left them, always just led them on with halfassed answers and a stern face, the same stern face he held onto nine-tenths of the time. He loved them both, even though they weren't his to love - they probably already realized they weren't biologically related anyways -, but they never seemed to live up to his expectations. Was it really so hard to think before talking or acting every once in a while? But he would never be overly hard onto them, pushing them until they broke and crashed, like his brother did. He didn't want either of them to feel they had to be a stone hard killer 24/7, but he wanted them to at least be able to pull it off better than he could at their age. Because he couldn't pull it off, he couldn't imagine himself in the arena covered in blood and battlecries, he couldn't see himself hurting anybody, he could never see himself fighting to death, he could never see himself reaching outside his brother's shadow."
