Anthem - Day 7

Somehow, as the sun goes down, the hugeness of everything around you becomes even more magnified. You feel small and afraid in the darkness, surrounded by mysterious shadows, and wonder exactly how long it is you have to live. Then the anthem begins to blare, and the faces of the dead—children just as young and innocent as you—appear far above your head. Will you be next?

It is not difficult to count that twenty of the tributes have already died, and there are only four tributes left — only three remain in the way of you and your crown.

As the anthem ends, the final image fades, once more leaving the sky lifeless. But not for long.

In the morning, you wake to an intense shaking that sends you grasping for whatever you can possibly reach that will hold you in place. At first, your imagination runs wild, and you think that giants must have descended the beanstalk and were now stomping across the arena towards you, but once you calm down you realize it's only an earthquake. Only an earthquake. You do the only thing you can think to do: you run, you keep moving, hoping to outrun the falling trees and crevices forming in the earth. If you don't stop, then maybe you can get away. Maybe you can reach somewhere safe.

Then as suddenly as it started, it stops. The world is still. Absolutely, positively, eerily still.
