The words of his dog fighting metaphor ring in my ears. That is deep. The most deep answer. Even better than I could've given. The fact and the truth involved in his statement it is so overwhelming I almost don't hear what he says next, "Iapitus. I...want to change it. A couple hours ago I would have said hell no and insulted you. But, after that, that whole fight. I...want to change it. But, it's going to be nearly impossible, you know that right?"
That makes me mad. We are Careers. Impossible is not in our vocabulary no matter what the situation. We train because we want our odds in the Hunger Games to not be impossible. We make things happen, no matter the chances or odds. But the worst part about what he said is that he's not wrong. How, after seventeen years of intense concentrated hate, am I supposed to forgive and forget and move on and become friends with Hammil. Can we even be acquaintances after this? Maybe the most this conversation will produce is a truce. No friendship. Just a cease to hate. But I will try my best, and if that is my best, so be it.
"I want to change it too, and that's a start. Especially since you said nearly." I look into his eyes. "In order for something like this to happen you have to really want it. Not the kind of want where it's in the back of your mind. If we're going to even try to change the way we see each other, we need to really want it. Do you?"
