“BREAK!”
Wyatt threw his ax down and stared at the foreman who was going around the work site, telling everyone it was time for their lunch break. He watched as some of the new workers tried to get in a few more logs, and the foreman yelled at them, telling them something along the lines of they won’t get paid more if they work into their lunch break. Wyatt had once tried that, back when he was still a kid and new to the job. He thought that by working more he could get more money, but his pay was never raised until finally the foreman in charge explained to him that the lunch break was mandatory and he was going to take the ax from him if he didn’t stop. Years later, the current foreman was more upfront about it as he literally threw the guys toward the break room.
He left his ax there, knowing no one was going to try to take it—it would have been a dumb move to take another man’s ax—and walked over to the “shed” that had small lockers for the workers to store their personal belongings. Grabbing his lunch from the little metal cube, Wyatt walked outside to sit against one of the trees that would not be cut down until another day. Sighing, he looked at what he had: a metal bowl of some grainy mush he had cooked up early in the morning. Shaking his head, he grabbed a utensil and started eating until he saw one of his coworkers, Axel, walking by.
“Hey, kid, come sit over here.” Out of all the workers at the work site, Wyatt liked Axel the most. They had both started logging at a relatively young age, and Wyatt had taken it upon himself to check up on the boy who was only two years younger than him. The poor kid was so damn skinny that Wyatt actually worried about him, something he would never do with his other coworkers. Axel had told him about his family situation, and Wyatt found him to be a good guy but a bit too altruistic to be considered smart. Even Wyatt knew that there was only so much he could provide for his family. “Kid, have you been gaining weight? I swear I can see your face filling up a bit.” Of course, he saw nothing of the sort as day after day, he could see Axel’s face getting thinner, but he liked to joke around a bit with Axel. A small grin on his face, Wyatt pulled out a cigarette from the new pack he had gotten and placed it between his lips at the corner of his mouth.
