Of all the people in Panem, I don’t know how Griffin found me when and where he did. Colton and I were taking a break from the Lexington household and we were hardly a day or so into our trip when he stumbled upon us. There is absolutely no doubt that I was completely shocked to see him even still alive after all these years (I had thought for sure that the Peacekeepers would have executed him by now) and I thought he was just as shocked to see me. I’ve changed a lot, both physically and mentally, ever since the last group of rebels was disbanded, and to me he looks just a lot more weathered than he used to be. If that was good or bad, I still have no idea; it appeared like weariness was only weighing more heavily on his shoulders than before.
Needless to say, we followed him. It didn’t take long before we were all caught up with one another (it helped some that I can’t speak so there was no senseless babbling, but it did take a while for me to write up a summary of what’s happened to me in the meantime) and Colton was already taking to Griffin like a bear to honey, running around and collecting leaves and twigs and other items to give to him as presents. It made me smile when he started using his words, even simple ones like leaf and stick, stone and branch – it took a few times for me to gather myself back together in order to write after I found myself beaming proudly over his little squeaking voice and those few words. Faith was doing an excellent job teaching him how to speak; it was a shame that we had to take a hiatus, but it was for the better. I didn’t want to endanger Jack’s family any more than I already had (I’d prefer to not remember when we were both held and I was whipped) and so we said our goodbyes, leaving with the promise to be back in a few full moons. I was encouraged to praise Colton whenever he used his words and I have been doing just that, nodding and smiling whenever he rightly named some object lying around. Kind of like our “homework.”
Griffin had told me that he’d been wandering around Panem ever since we last disbanded. He didn’t go into very much detail, but from the sound of it I gathered that he was alone for the majority of the time. I had given him a sympathetic look, but who was I to do that after I had found Colton not too long ago? I, too, had been awfully lonely, but getting my son back turned my life around in a reeling switchback. I still wake up to him staring at me, hardly two inches away from my face, and he’ll start whimpering and saying Puppy! Puppy! to get me to grumble and act as if I’m actually alive instead of locked away in hibernation. Sometimes I find it annoying, but when I do I scold myself: I searched the wilderness for him and I found him, I’m not about to get annoyed at the one thing I wanted more than anything. There were a few times he did that to Griffin in the mornings and unfortunately I never really saw his reaction to the large brown eyes staring at him in awe. Not once did I reprimand him, though; curiosity is something that should never be doused.
Colton sticks a leaf in my hair now as I sit on a chair inside a ruin house, back in Thirteen where we all first gathered. He already took a visual survey of all the new rebels and quickly lost interest, resorting to the leaves and occasionally saying the word to himself, twisting around in my lap to catch the leaf when it falls. Over his head I look out at the not so vast group of people who we recruited to make up the new Uprising, doing my own little survey. Once again we’re nothing but a motley crew of misfits joined by only a single cause, and whether or not that cause holds strong will be the real question. By the looks of it I’m the only Avox so that puts a downer on things quickly. (Even amidst groups of friends, the Avox draws the short straw.) No one has mistreated me yet and I hope to keep it that way.
Colton’s head comes up as he tries to stick the leaf in my hair again, blocking my view once again. A smile draws itself across my face but I gently lower his hand to his side, shaking my head. It’s about time we got down to business and introduced ourselves to one another (better let everyone know who they could very well die beside) so I give Griffin a small nudge with the curved end of my hook, trying to get him to initiate the meeting.
