Her bones felt lighter. There were no responsibilities out here on the shores, where salt lapped her feet and waves sang to her in her brother's hauntingly beautiful voice. There was nobody here to order her around, to tell her what she should wear, how she should sit and how to express her manners. That was gone when she was here, every last bit of it. She felt like a feather with all of her worries having vanished. Here there was nothing weighing her down to the dirt. The only thing that anchored her to this beach was her own willing spirit.
She inhaled a salty breath and stretched herself out against the sand like a star. The adults always spoke of snow in other districts, but that didn't exist here. District four was only ocean, salt, sand and sun. A winter's chill would brush skin here and there, but today was not one of those days. Today, Mother Nature was merciful. As a cloud hovered in front of her precious sunlight, she smiled and let her body imprint the sand. It would press the shape of an angel, no doubt.
