These things always made you absolutely uncomfortable, especially now that two of your own had been thrown into the games and killed. Beatrice had only died yesterday, and yet your family still insisted on getting together to force awkward conversation and pretend that nothing was wrong. You were so mad. What kind of respect was this? You didn't even like Beatrice and you still thought this was wrong. Was she the shame of the family or did people simply not care enough to honor her.

Sure, her funeral wouldn't be for another week or so, but they at least could have some god damn manners.

I didn't know Beatrice all that well if I had to be honest with myself. I don't remember if we met that often or not. She was my cousin though and seeing her in the games causing a lot of mayhem and destruction had to be one of coolest things ever. My respect and admiration for Beatrice grew each day the games advanced, but her untimely death shocked me. She had been doing so well until that bitch from three killed her. Not one moment goes by where I wish she was alive and kicking ass. The stroke that killed her had been a fluke. The bitch's own district partner cut her down.

Milo Birch:

I sit at the end of the table, my head buried in my arms as I rightly mourn my only respectable cousin. She had killed out there, without hesitation and with merciless words. Why were we here when we could be at home, considering her weaknesses and hoping to ripred we didn't make the same mistake? I was ashamed of the family, not only for birthing two losing tributes, but for not even properly mourning them.

I raise a head without caution and give my family my favorite glare, "You all are a bunch of assholes, you know that right?" I snip and fall into my hands again, dry "sobs" racking my body.

It's not like Hades was all that close to Beatrice, sure there was some sort of attachment because they were family and all but it would be a lie to say that he was completely devastated when she died.She simply wasn't the best in that arena, not much that can be said about that. Now it was the family get together, it was so obvious this was awkward, Hades's older brother Terry was clearly pissed off and he had no idea how to lighten the mood. "Here you go Terry" He says as he passes a jar or marmalade . "Th-this chicken is very delicious." He says awkwardly, looking down at his plate and trying not to make eye contact with anyone in particular.

My little brother tries to calm me down as he passes my demanded condiment and makes awkward talk about chicken. Like anyone cares, and this care is only punctuated by one of our younger cousins, Milo, screaming down the tables. "You all are a bunch of assholes, you know that right?" Her words echo my feelings and I snort as I spread the marmelade all over my chicken.

"Sure thing, Milo." I respond dryly, and give her a bitter look. Who said I had to be nice today? "How you doing, Ares?" I look at yet another cousin. Goodness knows we had too many.

"You all are a bunch of assholes, you know that right?" Hades wasn't going to lie, this confused him, he was an asshole? He honestly did not understand what was going on anymore. He thought they were just supposed to be eating dinner but he was sort of oblivious to why everyone was angry at each other. If they were grieving he's understand but why would they be angry at each other? "B-but, what did we even do to be assholes?" He asks, clearly confused at what all the anger was about. "There was nothing that could be done about it anyway." He says and tries to distract himself by cutting off a piece of his chicken and putting it in his mouth.

They don't understand anything. They can't understand anything, they're clearly too dimmed. Am I the only smart one in this entire family? What a joke. Little Hades (who is older than me, mind you, he should know better), doesn't seem to understand the seriousness of the situation. I raise my head again and look at him with an open mouth. Does he not understand? How can he not understand?

"Your cousin died yesterday, and you clearly don't have enough respect for her to honor memory!" I yell, the tears gone from my face only to be replaced by mirth. "We have a fucking reputation to restore, and pretending that nothing happened isn't going to help it any."

Ever since he arrived he was settled with the normal routine of "sit down, eat, shut up", because talking to his family was not a very high event on his list of priorities. In fact he had not even been paying attention to the words being flung around by three of the younger birches. Why should he even care really, with the family's luck two of them would be dead before he even turned 40. Besides, they were probably just talking about nothing of relevance anyways, so he dug into the meat laying in front of him with the knife and fork whiter than his sister-in-law's hair was turning into.

In reality, he hadn't heard anything of the conversation at hand until hearing Milo call the entirety of the room assholes. He knew that Beatrice's death was not something to just ignore, but there was a reason for it. Why bring up something out of hand at a family gathering, it was like he wanted to make everybody feel even worse over something they couldn't even control.

"Milo."

He wanted to point out the absurdity of his select choice of words, that he would be better off to shut up and eat his meal but why bother. Milo is just gonna leave him one day anyways and ignore this family in a couple years, so why even bother trying to stop him from digging himself into a hole.

Beatrice was pathetic. She should have won the thing if she was the best Birch. Too bad that she wasn't, but Elliot knew that he was the best. He would be the best Birch. Better than most of the ones at this table. HE would prove it to them, but for now Elliot ate quietly, not saying a word. Elliot listened to the Birch's arguing about the proper way to mourn. Elliot really didn't care, sure she was family, but it wasn't the end of the world. Elliot was getting tired of everyone's shit at the moment. The boy slammed his hands onto the table after Milo got her say in. "Now Listen here Milo. Hades has a point. There is nothing we could do. We are supposed to be a career family. Our reputation would go down the drain if we all started mourning and crying. We gotta seem strong to keep our Rep up and allow the capitol to see that the Birch's are fine. The only way to continue our rep is continue to act like nothing fucking happened. Now I hope you are happy. You have gotten me annoyed with you." Elliot sits down in his seat now. His blood still pumping swiftly. His adrenaline begins to fall and he smiles at Milo. He turns and says to Hades, "Can you pass me some chicken?"

This entire family is a waste of time. Sure, we were a career family but at the very least we could at least respect the dead. We were supposed to care about them, even if they were worthless now that they were dead. A number of my precious cousins shoot me threatening words and I feel myself boil over with anger. "Shut up, Uncle Severn!"

[/color] I snap and rise from my seat, my eyes really blurring over with tears. I was causing a scene but I didn't care. Elliot - oh so-righteous Elliot - rises from his seat and starts to throw words into my face. I listen intently, waiting to refute everything he says. I would win this argument, not him, never him.

"YOU CAN AT LEAST HAVE SOME FUCKING RESPECT." I spit, and slam my silverware into my plate with a shaking clatter. "The Capitol should be fucking impressed that Beatrice managed to cause the hell that she did... but no, I'm not going to argue this with you. You all are a bunch of assholes, and I don't care." I see Milo go off on everyone. It doesn't seem like anyone understands what the hell she's going through. I didn't know Beatrice all that well, but sitting here acting like we don't give a damn when she just died is unbelievable. I could see the point of acting tough in the district, but its all family here. Not one person seems to care for Beatrice right now except Milo. When I see about to leave, I get up myself to stop her. "Listen Milo. Don't worry about them. They must not love Beatrice like me and you. I didn't know her well, but I respected her a whole lot. She deserves more from us right now."
