I wander through the Meadow. I pick through the long strands of dull, brown grass to find the lone survivors of this winter chill. The survivors that I can take and use for myself and my mother. For us to eat. I look out at the fence and see the vast expanse of forest. Oh why can't I be out there? Life would be so much easier. I would be able to hunt and find all of the food that I needed. I could like in caves and trees. Instead, I choose to live here. I look around, taking in the sad appearance of this run down district. What an awful place. I get up and head right for it. Maybe I could slip something from a store that could help out tonight. I haven't had a meal in two days. I've been able to have a couple things I found lying around, but nothing I can call filling. Come to think of it, meals come once a great while.

I reach the District Square and get right into the middle of it. Where everyone's bustling around trying to buy things. The Hob is close by. But first I need money. I wish I didn't have to do this. As a man walks by I quickly reach into his pocket and take out some coins. But as my hand moves to my pocket his hand wraps around my wrist. He looks me right in the eyes. Menacing. He's tall and muscular with fiery eyes.

"Give those back." He spits at me.

I freeze. I don't know what to say. I try to tug my hand back, but his grip is too tight. I scream, hoping that someone will help me.

But watching you stand alone

[May Arthur]

There was silence. Silence as May walked into the District Square, looking around at various things without a worry on her mind. Well, she actually had a lot of worry on her mind, but it wasn't her main concern at the moment. The girl smiled delicately at everyone she walked passed as she made her way to the Food Section of the square. She had a little bit of money to spend on dinner tonight, even though it would be little to none.

As May entered the square, her boots clacking against the hard floor with every step she took, she observed a rather violent scene displayed right in front of her. A little girl was being tormented by a man. Luckily, May walked in just in time to understand what exactly was going on. At first, May planned on just walking by, letting he little girl suffer to this man's fate, but after a moment of thinking she thought better of it, and walked up to the man and girl.

"Janette, what do you think you're doing?" May thought, giving the little girl a random name as she looked down at her harshly. She extended her hand and slapped the little girl on the cheek, not extremely hard, but hard enough to be convincing enough in front of the man. With that, May grabbed the girl by the ear, and tugged on her gently.

"I'm so sorry, sir," May said, nodding her head before turning to look at the little girl in front of her. "Well? Give him his money back Janette."

"Janette, what do you think you're doing?" I hear a voice say behind me. I don't even register it until I feel a hand against my cheek. I turn away, fury. Who would just randomly slap me?! They're going to pay! I turn and glare at the person there.

She is tall, blonde, and thin with pale skin. She looks a lot like me, but there's no way she has any relations. I'm from the Seam. Even though I have the blonde hair and blue eyes for the richer part of the district, I live in the Seam. This girl looks well enough to be a resident of the rich section. Granted they are not actually rich, they are just wealthier than the Seam.

The looks at me with reprimanding eyes. I don't even know who she is. She has to be mistaking me with someone she knows. But her face doesn't change when she sees mine. What is she doing? Slapping me in front of a man? A man who grips my wrist with an iron hold and stares in wonder at the girl who calls me Janette. In fact, I'm wondering that as well.

"I'm so sorry, sir," she continues, then proceeds to nod and focus her eyes on me. "Well? Give him his money back Janette."

Maybe this girl is insane. Maybe that's it. Maybe that's why she was calling me Janette. Or maybe she's trying to help me! I almost shout out, "Oh!" before I realize that I'd ruin it. I drop the money on the ground, the man releasing his grip on me to stoop down and take some money. I look up a the girl. Not thanking her yet.

After all, that slap did hurt.

With a long, over-exaggerated sigh, May tugged harshly on the girl's arm, giving one last sympathetic apology to the man before walking away, the girl dragging along behind her. For a moment, there was silence as May pretended to look angry. At first, she thought about giving her one last scolding to try and prove her point to the man that wasn't even paying attention anymore since he got his money back.

May looked over her shoulder once more, making one final check as if to prove to herself a thousand times over that the man wasn't paying attention anymore. "I'm sorry if I hurt you little girl, that wasn't my intention, I did whatever I could to get you out of there. I hope you do not resent me for this," May said rather kindly, smiling warmly as if attempting to cheer up the random girl she had just taken a swing at.

"I can tell you're hungry," May said with sympathy. "I came to the Square to pick up some food for my family for dinner. We're having something of a feast tonight, whatever that means in District Twelve. If you're interested, you could come over." May let the offer hang in the air, not really sure what else to say as she shuffled awkwardly back and forth, examining the spot on the girl's face where May had hit her.

I follow a girl a few steps before she stops and turns around, apologizing. I look back. The man finishes picking up the coins I dropped and rushes off. I start to think how thankful I am to this girl. As I turn back around she offers me an invitation to a feast. She's definitely from the richer part of this place. My mother wouldn't be able to eat dinner though. She can manage a night without dinner. We've done it before. Plenty of times. Plus it's not like she deserves to be fed. I'm the one who's been feeding our family for the past few years. I deserve a break. Don't I? I can't get greedy. The last time I became greedy I was punished by going through a starving streak. Either God is really up there or karma exists. Or both.

I look the girl in the eyes. She seems very nice. She's only few years older than me too. I smile at her, but then quickly change my expression back to a small frown. That hurt to smile. Her slap must have caused a small bruise. At least it convinced him. But why'd she have to slap me. That still annoys me. But I accept the invitation with gratitude. It is a rare occasion that I am able to feast,

"Really? Thank you! That would be amazing!"
