Fish In the Sea (Ella//Rislan//Toni//Victoria)

I'm alone. My whole life I've been alone. But now I'm really alone, because Kassen is gone. My twin brother is gone. Gone forever.

Dead.

It hurts to accept that he's dead. But I must accept the fact that he's gone. How can I not?

What hurts the most is that I did it. I killed my own brother. I was just joking. I never thought the joke would turn into a murder.

I shoved his head underwater, laughing as I did this. I was just teasing. I never meant to . . . to kill him. I held him under too long, and when I brought his head up, he was dead.

I killed him. I did.

I always thought killing someone wouldn't be so bad. I'm a Career. I was born to kill. But kill my own brother? No, I wasn't born to do that. I was born to kill in the Games. Life is not a game, but I killed anyway.

I feel dead, lifeless, empty . . . just like Kassen felt when he died.

I cannot shove these thoughts out of my mind. I'm supposed to be fishing today, but I've done nothing. I don't want to do anything. I don't deserve to do anything after what I've done.

I angrily thrust my spear into the sand, the soft waves of salt water rushing over it. I can't help but convert my sadness into anger. I dig the spear deeper into the ground, imagining it as a helpless fish. The fish in my mind slowly grows brown hair and its body elongates, its scales disappearing and becoming tan human flesh. It has morphed into my brother. I gasp at this mental image and pull the spear from the ground.

Trying to distract myself from my thoughts, I look around for someone to talk to. Talking helps me distract myself. If there's no one around, I'll settle for talking to myself.

I'm in luck.

A few yards away from me stands a dark-haired boy who holds a trident in his hand. Curious, I walk towards him, my feet making prints in the sand. They would soon be washed away by the waves.

"Hello," I say. "Are you fishing?"
