Age: 17
Gender: Male
District/Area: District 2
Appearance:
It could be considered that Dread is a pretty boy, but then most in the upper districts are beautiful people because of how much they can afford. He has a rather square face that gives him a childish look with a large jaw. His nose is round and soft like most of the features of his face. His jaw is rounded regardless of being square, his eyes are round and soft, as well as his lips that seem to always be strangely pink for a man's. His hair tends to be somewhat of a mess at times, but mostly he pushes the dark brown locks back and up as he runs his hands through his hair for nervous habit. Finally, the last feature on his face are his eyes which always shine bright blue throughout the day and become a dull grey as the sun fades away. They seem to always be filled with a strange life inside of them that people can't quite place. They are something beautiful to hold regardless of if they are considered strange or not.
Besides the "pretty boy" face that Dread has, he isn't much of a pretty boy in the rest of his appearance. For starters, once you get below the neck you enter the average District 2 male body, muscular but the teenager is rather thin for being muscular. It is not the fact that he didn't bulk up like other boys through all of the extensive training his family put him through, but rather his other life choices that ate away the muscles he gained and gave him a thinner physique than the average boy. There is also the issue of his stomach and arms that if people actually saw, they would be repulsed by. For on his arms are tiny white lines running in any direction they so please, some even bulging in patterns of four as if it were a cat that scratched him too deeply. While his stomach on the other hand housed thick red lines running vertical with no clear explanation to them at all.
Finally there is the matter of clothing choices for Dread that makes him to be one of the least attractive people in District 2. For being from a rather well off family, he chooses to ignore the wealth but sticks with his favorite clothing denying that there is anything wrong with it. During the winter he can be seen wearing a tattered black wool jacket that is always unbuttoned to reveal one of his many grey t-shirts, some with stains while others remain clean. Then of course your eyes will go to the dark denim pants that appear to be the only pair of pants he actually owns. If the weather is cold enough it is possible to see him with a knit hat loosely placed on his head, but most likely not since there never seems to be weather cold enough for him. During the other months of the year the outfit is mostly the same, sometimes the jacket will be swapped out for a grey shirt with long sleeves. People question him for his strange lack of fashion sense but he likes what he likes and he really enjoys looking basically the same every single day of the year.
Personality:
Being raised in a career district was a strange thing for Dread considering everyone around him wanted the glory of being in the Hunger Games as well as desiring to waste their life away training. Dread never was that way even though his entire family was pushing for that single goal. He was different though because for some reason when he watched his first games and saw all of the blood shed and death, he was appalled. He couldn't stand to think of anyone wanting to kill anyone else. He was peaceful from that day forward, not wanting to cause harm to anyone or anything around him. He stopped eating meat when he thought how the animals they were eating were simply being raised for the slaughter, just like the people in the districts. As the years went on, he became silent and introverted for fear of what would happen when he expressed his opinions. He knew what happened when people opposed the games in District 2 and did not want the violence that it ended in.
When his parents started him in training for the games, Dread began to change deeply inside. Instead of just being afraid of the blood shed he understood how much of a failure he was to his district and his family. He was a let down to everyone around all because he didn't conform to the view that the games were life. With the constant reminder of being a disappointment to everyone, the introverted boy became the depressed boy who lived a lie inside of his mind. During the day he would walk about as if he were a zombie, a strange light in his eyes that was the life inside of his mind. A world he created all for himself that only he could enjoy and revel in. At night he would lie awake for hours while his family slept and spend time with the people he created, his peaceful family, his lovely friends and most of all his pets, the animals he didn't eat. The pressure became too much as he got older though, he couldn't take just living in his mind anymore because his family knew his time to be reaped and volunteer was running thin. He only had a few more years to become a victor so the training was intensified and his free time to think was diminished.
Dread became locked out of his own mind before long, a permanent zombie wandering through the district. He found a way to unlock his secret world though and turned to two deadly actions. At first it was simply just smoking to relax his mind and let himself in but when the habit turned into an addiction and lost the soothing effect it once had, an accident gave him another key. Pain was a great way to relieve the stress. It became a habit of his to smoke when he wasn't training and burn his stomach while he lay awake in his bed, desiring for the peace that his imaginary world brought him. There were days when pain of a burn wasn't enough to unlock the door so the boy found a more powerful key. He would sit awake and watch the blood drip down his arms as he disappeared into his own thoughts, a place where the pain didn't exist and the marks had long ago faded.
History:
Born during the late spring, Dread had two parents who seemed to love him very much. He was a happy and energetic child through his early years, playing games with the other children out in the streets until the day his family sat down and watched the Hunger Games being broadcast. He was only five when he started to actually understand what was going on in the games. The people who were being sent in were people he could have known and they were all being sentenced to their death. He was in shock at what was happening and began to question why all of it was happening. It was when he was ten that he truly started to change. He understood the concept of the games and why they were happening but he could not fathom why the people in his district were so obsessed with winning them. For the first time in his life, Dread began to wonder if he had been born into the wrong family.
It was when his father wanted him to start training for the games that he became introverted and lost the innocence and life of a child. He tried to argue with his father about how he didn't want to participate but the discussion was short lived. With one swift punch from his father, Dread quietly obliged and never spoke his opinion again. In fact for almost a year he refused to speak at all. It was the moment that he saw the mangy little cat wandering through a back alley that he found his voice again. He named the cat Lady and took it as his own, hidden in his room from his family. Lady became his only companion, his one friend that he could confess everything to. It was in that year as well that he learned in school what the Districts were for and how the people in district two received their food. He was disgusted by the mere term of slaughter and started to feed any and all of his meat to Lady, choosing to not partake in the slaughter of the poor innocent animals. Perhaps it was his soft spot for the living that caused him to not want to eat meat or perhaps it was the desire to feed Lady so she was strong and beautiful. No one would ever really know, but regardless, Dread never ate a piece of animal from that point forward in his life.
His life started to go downhill as he saw how the rest of his family acted. He would walk around and see everyone so bright and determined to become a winner of the games. He himself could not find that life within himself. He found a different life in his mind and took to living there as much as he possibly could. His depression only grew and grew until he was finding methods to distract himself and make things easier. Things only became worse for him as he started to near sixteen. Lady fell ill and died shortly after with no vet to help her. Dread became obsessed with smoking and then self mutilation thinking that it was his only way of living. It became all he had considering he stayed away from people for fear that he would never be accepted for his opinions. He had himself and only himself as he trained and avoided his family. He didn't want to remind any of them of how disappointing he was to the family name. There was a part of him that knew as soon as he reached nineteen and was safe from the games, life would improve and look up. He would finally be able to escape his family and live on his own.
So each day he pushed through the glares of anger and the thoughts of failure to a tiny light that was his mind where Lady still lived and the games didn't exist. He would travel there in the most cruel of ways only to fall asleep into nightmares that no one wanted to endure. He would awake and go through it all again. His mind his way station and the future his destination.
