The pile of wood in the fireplace is ablaze with fire. The flames are the only source of light and heat in the house. The living room in the Solace house is small with claustrophobic walls. Maybe one day the small room will catch on fire, since the Solace family keeps the fire burning all fall and winter long, and sometimes in the spring and even on the colder days of summer. The only sound in the entire house is the crackling of the fire and the soft breathing of a seventeen-year-old Freya Solace, wrapped in blankets and curled up by the fire.
Freya Solace's curly, wild ebony hair spills over her shoulders and ends at the middle of her back. There's a halo of frizz on her long dark hair, but Freya doesn't seem to care. Her face is lit by the bright fire, allowing her profile to be seen. The planes of her face are smooth and her nose is thin and small with a low bridge and a pointy tip. Below her nose are a pair of full, dull pink lips. Freya's chin is slightly crooked, but crooked chin and all, Freya is a beautiful girl. Her skin is the color of mocha and her cheeks flame with a rosy pink color. The irises of Freya's eyes match the color of freshly bloomed olives. The thick eyelashes that outline her eyes are as dark as her hair and just as wild and curly.
This dark-haired beauty is short for a seventeen-year-old girl: she is only 5'2. Freya's lanky build and flat chest makes her appear even slighter. Because of Freya's slightness, she has the body of a twelve-year-old - a child, when she has left her childhood behind. But her tiny body looks bizarre - not because her body makes her appear as a child, but because of her facial features. If one were to only see Freya's face, they would think that she was in her early twenties. Her mature face looks out of place on her tiny, childish body. In Freya's opinion, this clashing of different ages on her body renders her as undesirable.
But in personality, Freya is practically an adult with no trace of youth.. . .
Freya Solace has never quite fit in with the rest of her family. Her father's side of the family are all geniuses (and a little insane), who are adventurous, grumpy people. Her mother's side of the family are jokers, and love to laugh (very loudly) and play games. Freya got a mix of that. She isn't boisterous or grumpy, nor is she the sharpest knife in the drawer. Freya is a absent-minded and forgetful and a bit of a klutz, always knocking over her mother's precious glass sculptures she displays around the house.
She isn't very playful and would much rather paint or draw or even study than play. Freya thinks that playtime is for little kids, and she doesn't want to be a child anymore (although she is still viewed as one). Freya can be a little too serious and takes everything literally. She doesn't understand most jokes or metaphors or figurative language - in fact, she thinks they're stupid and pointless.
Freya hates noise. She can't focus on anything unless there is silence, and when a sound rips through the silence, Freya will lose it. She's not quick to anger, and is in fact quite patient, but when it comes to noise, she has no tolerance. Her nonexistent tolerance for a high noise level is found to be annoying by many of her peers.
She isn't one to quarrel. Freya prefers peace because she doesn't want to put up with any crap. She's docile and will agree with almost anything just to keep the peace. Although Freya is docile, she doesn't like to listen to her parents, especially her father. They are the only people that Freya disagrees and quarrels with on a regular basis. Because of her rebellious acts towards her parents, Freya considered to be an average teenage girl, at least by her parents. Her peers, however, view her as an adult trapped inside a teenager's body.. . .
Freya was raised to be a genius. She never met the standards her father set for her. Technology isn't her thing, but unfortunately it is her district's industry. Her mother pushed her to draw and paint, because as a toddler, Freya loved art. Her father was not happy with this, but what could he do?
Mr. Solace never stepped in to stop Freya from straying away from the path he wanted her to take until she turned twelve. He would yell at her and tell her that she needed to start taking her future more seriously. But by that time, Freya was already serious about art. She would retort, "Well, I can design graphics, can't I?" Her father had no response to this.
For years, he tried to push her towards the "right" path, but Freya refused and chose her own. Eventually, her father gave up. But he never stopped resenting her. Her father wanted her to be the best because Freya is his only child, but since she has no siblings, Mr. Solace began to show favoritism towards Freya's cousins. Freya didn't mind much: she and her father never had a good relationship, so she didn't really pay much attention to what was going on in his life.
Freya has always been detached from her family. She never had a special bond with anyone, not even her mother. She just never allowed herself to be attached, to have fun. Freya basically skipped childhood. Without happiness there can be no sadness; without sadness there can be no happiness. Freya seems to have neither of these, or at least she doesn't show it. What reason is there for her to be sad or happy? There is no reason at all. There is no sob story, no rainbows and cupcakes.
