Lying in the too soft bed in my luxurious room, I stare up at the ceiling, unable to sleep. I haven't slept well since I got here, my dreams plagued by nightmares which keep me awake at night. I toss and turn for a few moments before realizing that I probably won't get any more sleep. I swing my legs over the side of the bed, placing my feet quietly on the cold hardwood floor. Soft snores can be heard down the hall as I poke my head out. What time is it? I wonder, trying to find some sort of clock. I hear the chime of the grandfather clock in the sitting area and I count how many times it goes off. one...two...three...four...five...six...seven...eight...nine...ten...eleven...twelve... I mentally count, midnight exactly. What perfect timing, the witching hour.
I slip out of my room and silently take the stairs up to the roof, the cold air buffeting my cheeks and waking me up fully. I walk to the edge, looking down at the candy colored streets below. They're empty, I expected they would be at this time of night although sometimes you never really know, it is the Capitol after all. Sometimes, they're up at ridiculous times partying. I lean against the railing, my arms resting on the top as I look up at the sky to see the moon shining brightly in the inky sky. Surprisingly, up here, I can see some of the stars, their glow unhidden from the street lights below. Memories of lying on my back in the orchards during the growing season flash through my mind and bring a smile to my face. They also bring a stab of homesickness to my stomach. I miss my family and my home, I miss the smells of apple and cherry and orange that fill the air as well as the view of the trees full of fruit during the harvest time. I close my eyes, imagining that I'm home. I can picture it clearly, the sunshine warm on my face, the limbs of the trees fat with fruit, a smile creeps across my face until I open my eyes and the images shatter. I am not home, I am here in the Capitol, probably never to see the district I grew up in again.
Sighing, I rest my head on my arms, placing my chin on my forearm and gazing out at the lights. "Where'd you go, I miss you so, seems like it's been forever that you've been gone, please come back home." The lyrics make tears come to my eyes and I wipe them away with my sleeve. I miss my home, I miss the carefree life I had before I came here.
My thoughts wander back to my allies, the two people I'd managed to bond with over the last few days, Aurora, the girl from district ten who didn't waste any time on anything and Luke, the boy from eight who I'd found myself falling for. My cheeks warm as I think of Luke, why did we have to meet each other in such a terrible place as this, why couldn't we meet under better circumstances. As if summoned by my thoughts, I hear the door to the roof open and I twirl, seeing Luke standing in the doorway. A smile stretches over my face and I feel a blush creep over my cheeks. "What are you doing up?" I ask, curiosity getting the better of me.
