The Marvelous, Murderous Dempseys of District One [REBOOT]

Character Name: Greer Hayden-Dempsey

What are they like?: Greer lives a life of luxury. She always has. Her non-Dempsey family is wealthy beyond belief, but with grandparents who despise her very existence she has learned how to retain her lifestyle without their support while her mother is between wealthy husbands. A few scandalous affairs with some very important people can do wonders for a girl - even better, she thinks, than her mother's strategy of marriage to them. To her the shallow aspects of society in District One are things to be toyed with, and she absolutely adores the way that men squirm when she threatens to end their reputation. Of course, such funding is risky. Oftentimes her prey threatens to expose her or have her killed, and they certainly have the power. Secretly, she loves one thing even more than watching their pride crumble as they are forced to admit her power over them. No, the best thing is seeing the looks on their faces when they realize what she truly is as the knife drives into their stomach or the blood starts dripping from their nose. Men are such foolish, corrupted beings, insects that crawl among the filth and yet are considered to be mighty. Yes, her favorite part is when they die, slowly, and the next day she hears news of yet another body found with a bloody kiss on its forehead.

What's their history like? Greer's mother Elizabeth is a Hayden, and the Haydens simply do not tolerate scandals. When they found out that Greer was to be born, and born a half Dempsey at that, they told her mother that they would never offer support for such a child. Elizabeth found her own ways, seducing wealthy and often very old men into marrying her so that she might support her only child. She adored Greer and constantly flaunted the fact that she was a Dempsey, allowing the young girl to spend time with her cousins in order to further anger her grandparents. Some might believe that it was then that Greer learned the fine art insanity. After all, her childhood friends would grow up to become some of most infamous and feared villains of District One. Perhaps it’s true. Perhaps, ever since she was a child, she was doomed to be just as dark as they were. But her murderous tendencies cannot be credited entirely to her family.

There was another who played a part in what she became. He was nameless and faceless to her, but he stole what no woman should ever have forcefully taken from her one night. She was only fifteen. A week later, he was found dead and hanging by his feet in an alleyway. It was her first murder and perhaps her best despite the fact that it lacked her crucial mark, for that was the only time that Greer put her abilities on glorious display. The ones that followed him were often found simply lying down, tucked away behind a dumpster or in a trash can. While she is unhinged, she isn’t entirely stupid.

In some twisted way, he was her inspiration. When money became scarce she simply hunted another man down to tempt and then kill. Age and appearance did not matter to her. All she wanted was their money, and she never failed to receive it, living like a king’s mistress until her target became fed up and she had to dispose of him. There have been nine total since the first. Nine dead men in three years. Nine who cannot speak of what horrible things she did to them, of how she ruined them. Nine who can never, ever hurt someone as he hurt her.

She dreams of their final screams, and she smiles.

Thread/plot ideas?: Besides all the things above I imagine Greer having an extremely strong connection to her family, especially the Dempseys since her grandparents disowned her. Her reasoning for not joining into the gang war was fear of dying the way her father died, but I can see her struggling to explain herself to them in the aftermath and prove that she’s still a Dempsey before anything else, which might result in a spike in her murders. I can even see the killing developing into a comfort for her. I’d also like someone to find out about her being sexually abused at some point, perhaps?

“Oh, don’t be like that, love.”

Beryl wings fluttered uncertainly against twisted gold, and the bird avoided her hand even as she coated its cage with feed. She’d named him Sebastian, after her mother’s current husband. Her step-father had been delighted when he found out, and she’d sweetly told him that the bird’s beautiful feathers reminded her of his eyes. Her words were poison hidden by their sweetness, but he didn’t need to know that. She murmured to the bird gently, trying to persuade it toward its meal. “You’re hurting my feelings, you know. I made it myself.”

“Miss.”

Greer glanced up from her seat to see their maid lingering in the doorway. Sebastian had insisted on hiring her to care for the ladies, and neither Greer nor Elizabeth had protested. She cooked most of their meals and cleaned the house, chores that the two of them had never been good at. Her name was Aayla, and in all honesty Greer had grown quite fond of her. She was quiet but efficient, no older than seventeen and probably working in order to support an unfortunately large family. Her hand, bruised and blistered, held a steaming mug. “I brought you your hot chocolate.”

The corners of Greer’s lips curved into a smile. “Thank you, dear. You can just set it down near my bed.”

Greer didn’t miss the way Aayla’s eyes wandered around her room in wonder. Expensive and even somewhat exotic trinkets made it cluttered in the best of ways. Greer knew she looked like a child with too many toys, but she didn’t mind. On the contrary, she enjoyed the way people stared when they saw it for the first time.

“Your mother told me to tell you that she won’t be coming home this evening,” Aayla said once she’d set the mug down, turning toward Greer with a silent question in her eyes. The only downside to Aayla was her curiosity. If she wasn’t careful, it would get her killed someday.

“Probably off seducing another man,” Greer replied, waving her hand dismissively. “I don’t blame her.”

“Mr. Sebastian is ill, though.” Aayla’s eyes were wide and she looked distinctly uncomfortable. “Shouldn’t she be by his side?”

Greer scoffed. “Absolutely not. In fact, it’s all the more reason for her to go out. How old is Sebastian, again?”

“Seventy three, Miss.”

“Seventy three,” Greer nodded approvingly. “That’s a good, long life.”

When she said nothing more Aayla seemed to take it as a dismissal, leaving the room hurriedly. The young girl had much to learn if she was live in their house. Greer rose to retrieve her hot chocolate, sipping it thoughtfully. If Sebastian was truly as ill as her mother seemed to think, it was probably time for her to go out again, as well. She set the mug, half empty, near the cage, smiling as she pulled on her coat. "I told you it was good, love," she murmured as she slipped out the door.

In her wake, the bird lay unmoving at the bottom of its cage.

HI. I'M ANZIE AND I WANT A DEMPSEY

Character Name: Quinn Nathaniel Dempsey

What are they like?:
He's a loud, brash boy. No, man, really, he's a man at sixteen or he's going to be one soon. And he secretly thinks he's more man than anyone he knows, what with his ability to not feel any pain; after all, isn't a high tolerance for pain a powerful indicator of masculinity? He'll laugh in the face of anyone trying to hurt him. Because he can't physically be harmed, he's tried it, he knows what it feels like (nothing, nothing, nothing). It's all flowers and fields for him, pain. And he doesn't give a damn what others think about him (crazy, weird, freak). He doesn't mind. He doesn't care. (Or he doesn't show that he cares, this life is like a constant masquerade of people hiding their true selves behind a sneer.) To prove that he's completely invulnerable Quinn hurts others - furry animals, children, women, people - because it's proof that he's better than them, stronger than them, just generally more amazing, and while he's never touched his family he's not above considering it. And he's in love with the idea of love and while he searches constantly for that special someone, in reality he doesn't care for anyone but himself.

What's their history like?
Cold, quiet, empty, not that empty is a problem. Quinn has never really had a friend, and while it doesn't bother him he finds that there are some things he'd like to share. But he's too good for anyone he knows, too good for anyone he's ever met thus far. He looks down on his peers and in turn they loathe him for who he wants to be. He grows up alone (but never lonely, or at least not that he'll admit), the only son of a bedridden father and a constantly worried mother. 

He wasn't a Dempsey before. He was only related distantly after all, through his mother's cousin's aunt, and hence he never had the name attached to his own before. He thought nothing of it (if he ever did, it was only a fleeting thought of a mix of contempt and grudging admiration). At fourteen there might have been an issue when he was younger with a certain someone calling him a weak little shit and Quinn challenging him to a fight of knives and he's got scars from the battle but he can't feel them anyway. And when they called him crazy for almost killing the whimpering boy, Quinn was reminded of the relative whose name he doesn't share. So he took the name for the meaning it gives him, even when his mother told him not to. He took it for the power it gave him over everyone else, and suddenly he wasn't the son of his weak and useless father anymore. 

Suddenly he was a Dempsey, and it's like a rush of adrenaline through his veins. 

Thread/plot ideas?: Well it kind of feels like he might end up trying to be Kaelen's padawan. Or, if you oppose the idea, he might try and one-up Kaelen at some point. Anyway, he'll calm down a little as he matures, maybe something horrible happens to him and he realizes that he's been a complete *insert word for horrible person here*. I'm not sure the Dempsey's are too aware of him? He might try and make an entrance sometime.

"Do you know what pain is?"

The voice belongs to the burly older boy pinning Quinn down to the mat. His breath is rank and Quinn briefly contemplates spitting in his face but doesn't really want to open his mouth to that smell. It's gross, for one, and for another it'll feel like they just made out second-hand, which... gross. And he's pretty sure saying so won't faze the boy in the slightest.

In his head Quinn's laughing quietly to himself because the situation seems all too ridiculous; Quinn is losing a battle, or at least everyone else seems to think so. Quinn rather thinks that he's giving this boy a chance because, let's face it, he needs one.

But jeez, the older boy didn't really need to get so annoyed for no reason, no reason being the girl with her hands covering her mouth in what looks like horror. Quinn cranes his neck to give her a wide grin and hears the growl of complete fury escape his captor. Quinn's hands go from touching each other to touching each other, which means that the older boy's grip has tightened even further. Mentally, he rolls his eyes; it both amuses and exasperates him to remember that other people constantly forget he's immune to pain.

Which brings him back to the question: "Do you know what pain is?"

Quinn tests the grip of the boy. Tight, too tight for him to tear free. Well, he's strong. Quinn thinks, anyway. It'll be useless trying to get free, so maybe something else will work. Silently contemplative, he lets his gaze run over the boy, whose expression turns from furious to wary, then closes off to contemptuous. 

"Answer my question, you little freak."

Quinn's lower lip curls silently and he gives the boy a deliberately insolent look. "I don't feel like it," he says, injecting as much of a drawl as he can into his voice. The expression on the older boy's face might be priceless if it wasn't for the fact that the same expression is a constant in Quinn's life. On just about everyone's face, really.

"Maybe you'll feel like it after-"

Quinn lunges up to kiss him. (He hears the pop from one of his shoulders; maybe it's come out again. What a bother.)

The effect on the older boy is instantaneous. The choked breath and the way Quinn's hands are suddenly free when the boy's hands find their way to Quinn's hair is quite telling, really. He'll be shocked if the girl decides to stick around him after this. Except that it lasts for maybe a second and then Quinn's sure they both shove each other away (Quinn with his body as the boy attempts to shove him back) and Quinn is suddenly flat on the ground, brilliant peals of laughter filling the air around him, adding to the beautiful tension that lingers in the training room.

When he's done, he rolls over to give the boy a lazy grin. "Gotcha," he says, and gets to his feet. The boy is out of breath, face flushed red with... anger? Embarrassment? Shame? That doesn't matter. All that matters is that, in some roundabout way, the boy's given up. And that means Quinn won.

Grinning quietly to himself, Quinn looks down at his useless arm and reaches up to pop it back into place. (It's simple and easy because he's used to it, but he supposes he'll be forced to see the nurse again before he leaves.) He turns to look at his opponent and bows mockingly, the grin never leaving his face. (The boy looks disturbed; Quinn feels like asking him why he's so serious.) 

But before he steps off the mat, he turns and says, "By the way, my answer is no."

And Quinn goes.
