WE DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT OUR BAD REPUTATION.
In the streets of District One, the name Dempsey is met with either fear, loathing, respect, or some mix of all three. And why wouldn't it be. With the country's most-wanted serial murderer, a few killers who haven't been caught yet, a fallen tribute remembered fondly in the Capitol, and more crazy than you can shake a stick at, the Dempseys are a memorable family to say the least. With the dust finally clearing after a long, bitter conflict between the rich and poor of this divided District, the Dempsey family has emerged, not entirely intact or unscathed, but not entirely wiped out either. Where they stand is uncertain. Where they go is up to them.
KAELEN [SOUTH]: 19 - LIVING - THE WILDERNESSArguably the tipping point that pushed the Dempseys from impoverished obscurity into renowned infamy, Kaelen's name is a household one even outside of his home District. Highly mentally unstable, he suffers from issues that include but are not limited to paranoid schizophrenia, sociopathic tendencies, psychosis, and a god complex. He grew up in an abusive home, the only bright spot in his childhood provided by his aunt and uncle, whom he regarded as surrogate parents, and his cousins, who he saw more as sisters than he did his own actual half-sister Elvira. However, their influence wasn't enough to avoid the horrifying eventuality of his madness. After going on a two-year murder spree that started at age sixteen and claimed over a dozen lives, Kaelen fled to District Thirteen to ensure his own survival, only returning when he found out that his cousin Kiera had entered the Hunger Games. After becoming involved in the gang war, being physically maimed and losing the love of his life as a result, he was captured, taken to the Detention Center, tortured, and left out in the woods to die. At the moment, Kaelen rather hopes he does die, convinced that he has lost everything in his life worth caring about.
ELVIRA [CLOVER]: 17 - LIVING - THE WILDERNESSKaelen's half-sister and the result of their father's affair, Elvira has spent her whole life being hated by her brother for the percieved sin of being born. Kaelen saw Elvira's existence as the cause for his mother's suicide, and as a result has never shown any affection to her, opting to outright despise her instead. Elivra in turn eventually gave into her own hatred, which led to several years of the siblings making unsuccessful attempts on each other's lives in their adolescence. When Kaelen fled the District, he took measures to fake his own death and implicate Elvira as the murderer. Fearing for her own safety, Elvira ran as well, taking to the wilderness, where her loathing and anger only festered. No one knows exactly where she is or what she's doing, but one thing is for sure: there's a storm brewing in her, one that won't quiet until she gets the vengeance she seeks.
AMBROSE [CHARADE]: 42 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONEThe patriarch of the Dempsey family, Ambrose is the brother of Kaelen and Elvira's late father. While the Dempsey family is a prime example of generational poverty, Ambrose is incredibly intelligent and has always done his best to provide for his own, supporting a wife and six children for several years as well as going out of his way to make sure his nephew was at least getting enough to eat. However, after losing one daughter to a natural disaster, another to the Hunger Games, and almost a third one to gang violence, Ambrose's mild-mannered acceptance of his lot in life has taken a turn. He is no longer complacent, and no one really knows what that means yet, himself included.
LEANDRA [OPEN]: 40 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONELeandra, known as "Letty" to her friends and family, is the bright spot of sunshine in a family otherwise soaked in darkness. She has a heart of gold and is a mother to many of the motherless children on the poor side of District One, a habit exemplified by taking care of her nephew after his own mother passed away, often giving them food from her own pantry and clothes from her own business to make sure they aren't hungry or cold. Eccentric and admittedly half a bubble off, she makes her financial contribution to the family by owning and operating a mildly successful costume shop. It's not uncommon to see her walking around dressed in her wares, cooking dinner as a fairy or grocery shopping as a geisha. However, her sunshine has been dampened by the loss of two of her children, something that her family sees as almost as much of a tragedy as the deaths themselves. In a way, she also blames herself for not seeing the red flags in Kaelen's unstable personality earlier on, and thinks quietly to herself that all of the resulting destruction was somehow her fault.
MOIRA [WINDY]: 20 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONEThe oldest Dempsey daughter, it could even possibly be said that Moira was where the Dempsey family's legacy of insanity began, not Kaelen. Growing up in a poor family with five younger sisters, Moira was forced to grow up too fast, her childhood stolen by responsibility. This led to a very active inner child and a love of games that soon turned deadly, one too many chess matches with good old Cousin Kae waking her up to the fact that games could be weapons. After her sister died in the most deadly Game of them all, Moira suffered a psychotic break and left her family, striking out on her own for the first time in her life and struggling to find her place in the world.
CORA [OPEN]: 19 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONEGrowing up in a large family didn't do wonders for Cora Dempsey's psyche. Suffering from very prominent middle child syndrome, Cora constantly felt ignored by both her parents and her sisters. Artistic and creative, she found the attention she so desperately sought in her cousin Kaelen, who was the same age and shared many classes with her in school. This compulsive need for attention soon blossomed into a sick, incestuous obsession in their teenage years, a burning jealousy towards any female that got close to what Cora percieved as hers. When Kae fled the District, abandoning her and dissolving what had been an incredibly close friendship for years, it broke something in Cora's mind. Left alone and ignored once again, she began a habit of stalking anyone who would make the fatal mistake of giving her the slightest bit of attention, developing insane fixations on them that always ended up turning murderous when she discovered that they too didn't return her affections. With each new victim, she seeks to fill the hole left in her heart, and with each victim she finds that it only grows larger. She remained at home with her family after Kiera died, her sense of abandonment only increasing when Moira and Blair ran away.
KIERA [SOUTH]: 17 - DECEASED - DISTRICT ONEWhile her intentions were always good, Kiera's insanity warped them into something deadly. A degree of mental instability that had always been there was fostered into maturity when Kiera and her younger sister Aurora sought out Career training from their cousin, who was all too happy to oblige - and indoctrinate them with his sermons about the evil of humanity in the process. Under Kaelen's instruction, Kiera developed her own god complex, believing it her duty to pick up where her cousin left off after he fled District One. Believing herself a savior of the weak and champion of the just, Kiera volunteered for the 62nd Hunger Games to save the life of her childhood friend Ella Dahl-Moreno, a decision that sparked a year of conflict and war between the dusty street rats of District One and the wealthy, prideful Moreno family. Sanity only found her at the very end of her life, and Kiera died hating her cousin for what he had done to her. Little did she know that her name would become a rallying cry, her visage that of a martyr for a people who had grown tired of oppression and poverty.
SIBERIA [ELEGANT]: 18 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONEKiera's twin sister, Siberia was believed dead in the aftermath of the terrible earthquake that rocked District One the year of the 60th Games. However, she survived, with massive head trauma that let to retrograde amnesia and caused her to forget everything about who she was. Her family has no idea that she's alive, and Siberia has no idea that she even has a family, adopting the name "Eden" and making her mark on the District as a junior member of the Peacekeeping force. The only person that knows her true identity is The Detective, a mysterious and brilliant young consulting Peacekeeper who has stayed in District One far longer than his Capitol mandate required. His supposed romantic involvement with one Kiera Dempsey has never been confirmed or denied, but it would certainly explain why he's taken her twin sister under his wing, training her as his personal protegee. Perhaps he's trying to make up for what he lost.
AURORA [SOUTH]: 17 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONEQuiet and shy but prone to explosive fits of violence, Aurora's tragic history has shaped her into the unstable wreck she is today. It is arguable that she was both physically and emotionally abused by her cousin, who put her through hell under the guise of "Career training," although she would never admit as much, swearing loyalty to and affection for Kaelen in spite of the brutal tactics he used to harden her into an effective Career. However, her sexual assault by a stranger at age fifteen was what truly cemented her psychological frailty, leading to a distrust of men that borders upon terror and an complete aversion to human touch. During Kaelen's stay in District One after Kiera's death, Aurora broke these personal rules by developing a friendship with his boyfriend Colt Hanlon, something that soon blossomed into the closest friendship she'd ever had. When both Kaelen and Colt left the District again, Aurora was left abandoned and wounded both physically and mentally, having been stabbed in the chest during a gang fight. The injury resulted in a collapsed lung, and while she lived, the injury left her physically fragile, unable to do strenuous activity or even be on her feet for too long.
BLAIR [CHAOS]: 13 - LIVING - DISTRICT ONEThe youngest and possibly most disturbed member of the Dempsey family, Blair is a chronic insomniac, managing only a few hours of sleep a week and using these extra hours to float about like a specter. Watching. Waiting. With a cold, detached personality and a distinctly creepy air about her that even managed to scare her infamous cousin, Blair grew up with no friend in the world besides her sister Kiera, who, far from being scared of her, adored her. When Kiera died in the Arena, Blair's already fragile psyche snapped, causing her to run away from home and go on a miniature murder spree that, while smaller than her cousins, might have been even more terrifying. A twelve year old felling grown men with a kitchen knife is scary enough, but stealing hunks of hair and clothes to sew into dolls that trap their souls, making them her unwilling friends forever? And they say Kae's the crazy one.
OTHER:Ambrose Dempsey was the oldest of three brothers, and he is the only one still alive. Kae's father Todd was poisoned by his own son, and the youngest brother Damien died young as a result of gang violence. While he never married, it's perfectly possible that Damien might have had children, being the roguish vagabond that he was, and so there's the possibility of a few more Dempsey cousins floating around out there. The would be no younger than seventeen, as I believe Kae was just a baby when Damien died, possibly no older than twenty. I'd say that Damien died at the age of 18-20 himself. It's likely that these other Dempseys would have never met their father, and anyone writing them would have to come up with the excuse of why they weren't around during the whole ordeal with Kiera's death - Bitterness? Fear of getting involved in the gang war? Your call. However, it's perfectly justifiable that all of the cousins would have been close as children. ALSO, since Todd was already adulterous, Kae and Elvira could have one or two more half-siblings out there, however, UP TO THIS POINT KAELEN AND ELVIRA WOULD NOT BE AWARE OF THIS. You will have to be very careful if you're attempting to make a character with this background, but it IS possible. Dempseys have a genetic predisposition for crazy, so pretty much anything goes. As for FC's, just remember the family features - dark hair, brown/amber eyes, delicate bone structure, and some have a bit of a severe look about them.CHECK-INS AND NEW APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY FEBRUARY 23RD.
