"Why won't you just come play with us?" The ten year old girl ran a hand through the tangled mass of blonde hair on her head. "You always stay inside and read those dumb books! Would it kill you to just play with us this one time?" Finally, the young boy peered over the book in his hands at his sister, then at his brother who stood silently next to her. (Colette was always the talker.) He rolled his emerald eyes and pushed a blonde curl from his forehead.

"They aren't dumb. They make you smarter, actually, but fine. I'll play with the two of you. Happy?" Both of the people he had literally been born with smiled the very same smile he wore when he was happy and nodded excitedly. He closed the book and took his sister's free hand, the other already occupied by Kyros. "We're gonna have so much fun!" So, so much fun.

Even in a house that is never empty, (seriously, I can never get time alone in this place.) I have always done a more than decent job of keeping myself at a minimum of friends. I don't need friends. I don't need any distractions, for that matter. I am determined to prove the world wrong, since it seems to have labeled me the less-than-capable one of my family. (Why, I have no idea. It shocks me that some of my siblings can even remember their own names.) More specifically, of the trio that was born to a prostitute (Dad clearly doesn't understand what "marriage" means.) I am viewed as the weakest simply because I prefer brain over brawn.

My brother is the best career, my sister's not afraid to play dirty to get what she wants. Me? I lie. That is my strength. That is what I have that no one can take away from me, my ability to trick someone, to make them wholeheartedly believe everything that comes out of my mouth.

Together, the three of us really are unstoppable. In fact, when we work together, I don't think we have ever lost. We used to go on "missions" together, to steal something from one of our siblings, or get food from the kitchen when we weren't supposed to and we never failed. We were born losers, but we fought to become winners. I could lie and say it didn't take much, and that it was just as easy as flipping a switch and coming out on top, but it was earned.

The heated glances our mother (the one we live with, not the dead one.) would sneak to us when our father was away, the ostracism of me and my brother and sister from the other children, the constant reminders that we would never be as successful as our siblings, it sucked. But we let ourselves grow from it.

"Where do you three think you're going?" Short cropped dark hair and a menacing smile stared at them, coffee colored eyes swimming in curiosity. "Outside to play," Colette said gently, her voice barely any louder than a whisper. "Are your chores finished?" She asked, and clicked her long nails on the counter. She didn't wait for an answer.

"You know the rules, if you can't do your chores, you can't play. Upstairs, all three of you." Lucian looked first at Kyros, who had dropped his gaze to his feet, then to Colette and her blushing cheeks and watery eyes. Their "mother" always did this to them, never even gave them a chance to explain. Right then right there, he decided that was going to change.

"We did finish our chores, actually. We are the only ones in the house that have." The woman's dark eyebrows raised a bit in surprise, but Lucian never dropped his gaze from her. "Come on, guys. Let's go play." Then, the three of them slammed the door shut behind them, never even glancing back to see if the woman was coming after them. That was when they realized something: If they stuck together, nothing was impossible.

Nothing.

So that was how the three that everyone swore couldn't learned they could. That was how the children born illegitimately rose to the top of the pack, the ones forced to live with their married father when their mother passed away became soldiers, each others rock. That was how they became winners.
