I swim through the pain and I only let me legs slow when I am far away from the Cornucopia, the bloodbath. I switch a blood soaked piece of moss and switch it with another from a nearby tree. The moss is soft and comforts me, reminding me of my ally, Moss Rose. As I throw the blood soaked moss into a bush and replace it with the clean one, I let my mind wander. Moss and Luke, I hope they are okay. I can't remember any cannons going off while I was there, I was to busy fighting for my life. But I am sure someone died. My family's eyes are glued to the screen, watching children dying. Do they care? Possibly Gabriel, not so sure of the rest. I've never know if my family has cared for me; they never got to know me, I never got to know them. They were just people who I lived with, people who shared the same blood.
I bit down hard on my lip, the pain taking over my thoughts. They took my left off, severed it like they were chopping up a carrot. They took my arm as well as they tattoo inspired by the drawing Gabriel drew on my wrist. I am mad, very mad. I am not unfamiliar to this emotion and find my self welcoming it. Lately, I have been too kind, pretending to be a good girl. I masked the darkness inside, how I feel. Now I don't have to pretend to me a little girl that is happy to be in this pageant of death. The only time I didn't pretend was when I was with Moss and Luke. I was straight up honest, no lies had been told.
I lean against a tree, the earthquake inside my head has yet to subside. I hope the moss delays the blood from joining the dirt on the ground, but I know that moss alone isn't enough. Hopefully I will meet up with my allies and we can figure something out.
The haze and headache doesn't subside and I start to doubt they ever will. To distract myself I look around, taking in my surroundings. I am surrounded by trees, vines, undergrowth; this must be earth. I take deep shaky breaths in attempt to calm myself. I can work through this, I will survive. No, not just survive, I will live. A push away the reminder that I don't really want to survive. I will be hunted down and I must hide out. Hopefully I will find Moss and Luke.
I see a blurry figure in the distance. I squint and as I the figure comes closer I see Moss, hope bursting inside of me. I jump out of the bushes and walk over to here, trying my best to be quiet. "Moss! Where's...." I don't allow myself to finish that sentence. Oh no, he's gone. He could be lost though, we won't know until we see his face in the sky tonight. By the look on her face, I think we both know that he's not going to be coming back to us. I supply a weak smile and step forward to hug her, even though I'm really not the most into touching people. My thoughts cause me to step back cautiously, sure that she'll flip out. I would do the same.
Yet as I take a closer look, I realize that the figure in the distance is merely my imagination. Moss wasn't here. Had she forgotten me? I wondered for a moment if we had ran in opposite directions, torn apart by the fight for our lives.
It's getting late. Perhaps the pair of them died, and I am all alone. All I could do was sit and wait for the anthem to reveal its secrets. Was I truly alone in this arena? Only time would tell.
