ARGONITE SHORE
He’d laughed so hard his belly ached when he curled up on the sand. Backpack under his head and naginata at his side. It felt like home. He’d thrown some daredevil promise at Ares, that he would seek revenge, but hadn’t put any strength behind the words. He’d fallen asleep to the sound of the breeze through the trees, the crash of the surf, and of course Ares’ snores.
Sometime in the night he heard footsteps. His hand clamped over his glaive, ready to skewer the intruder. But it was only Cheska and Magenta, back from who knows where. He didn’t lower his weapon until he saw their faces, dirt and battered by the arena, but still his friends. He tugged Magenta down by the ankle, rolled so that instead of spooning her back, as always, he held her, face to face. Argonite let his forehead fall against hers, and whispered, “I can’t sleep without you. Don’t leave me like that again.”
He held her throughout the night, twisting her hair around his hands, threading his legs through hers, until they were so close, their breath mingled in the morning dew. He worked his jaw, mouthing her name as the sun rose. “Magenta,” he finally said, just as the dawn gave way from pastels to gold. There was so much he wanted to say. That it wasn’t going to be easy, or fair, but he wanted to try anyhow. The way he had wanted to try with Kellan, although it probably wasn’t wise to mention that. He wanted to tell her how beautiful she was, how much he needed to be by her side.
Instead, he said, “I think I hear someone coming.”
