Laila Sycamore scowled at the world.
Her eyes burned when they looked upon her broken allies – Eye with his snapped femur, supporting a hobbling Willis who could not walk on a shattered kneecap. Claire with a useless, dangling arm. It wasn’t fair. Why were they so weak after only two days of battling ugly shits that chewed grass? She didn’t like this game they were playing. She had been trained to slay knights, not beasts, so what was she to do when faced with a landscape overrun with monsters? Where were the savages pretending to be heroes, the ones she would see on television? Where were the humans? They certainly weren’t slaughtering one another or she would be hearing cannons echo left and right. I didn’t come here to get my ass kicked by animals. If she was going to die it would be by a human hand - one she would bite and spit at when the time came. In the meantime she would flaunt a frown until every broken and twisted thing could be mended. You’ll be wearing a frown forever, then.
In her own way Laila felt as broken as the others. She could twist her features into whatever scowl she pleased but there was still part of her that smiled – a red smile decorating her abdomen to match the clumps of crusted blood in her hair. It was a gaping grin that mocked her world, toothless and drooling before Eye could stitch its lips with a needle and thread. It was a generous gift from sponsors, a silver beacon of hope for relief. When it landed at their makeshift camp she was eager to unscrew the lid and claim her prize, but even as she recognized the medical kit and its contents from the first aid training station she was still hesitant to utilize its advantages. She had practiced mending split skin in the training center, but that was false nerveless flesh that didn’t belong to her. This was real. This was a real gash across her stomach that burned and bled even as she sat completely still. How could she shove a needle into her own throbbing skin?
In the end she asked Eye to complete the task, and he obliged. She was grateful for the help because it hurt more than she could’ve possibly imagined, and it took every amount of restraint not to thrash and flinch under the malicious touch of the needle. Now the wound was only a sealed smirk, still burning like fire yet safe from potential infections or complications. Her insides ached as well – not as severely as the surface, but the hollow depths of her shriveling stomach growled for sustenance. She soothed one craving by gulping her water down as soon as the little pill she dropped into it dissolved the impurities. Sleep was the only option after that. They were all exhausted and suffering from a day’s worth of injuries, and it was impossible not to hear whimpers as they stirred in their tents. Willis was missing a finger and supporting a broken knee, Claire was forced to drag a split arm, and Eye’s femur would be a burden for the remainder of the Games. Laila’s bones were absolutely fine – sore, but unharmed, yet she still fought tears until sleep wiped them away. Another short night.
One more death had been added to the graves, and it wasn’t enough. As she folded her tent and stuffed it into her bag beneath pouring rain, surrounded by weird ass boulders with names on them (she recognized them, but she refused to mention it) she wondered just how far away they were from the nearest tributes. Shouldn’t they have stumbled upon another person by now? All they could find were obnoxious mutts. Is thatwhat the Gamemakers wanted? To humiliate them with giants and monsters instead of giving them merciful deaths dealt by real people? Fuck them. Laila was not going to be killed by some stupid animal, she didn’t care how big or small.
As if on cue, she inhaled smoke. When she turned around it was Eye who polluted the air with smog from a fire, the orange flames licking the tar from his katana as he lunged at what appeared to be another large beast. ”Seriously?” she exclaimed, withdrawing her own blade. This was becoming exasperating. Couldn’t these shits just leave them alone? ”I’m tired of these stupid mutts.”_____________________________________________________
