"We're gonna let it burn"
"Moss Rose" The moment her name was called, you knew she didn't stand a chance in these games. She was too sweet, your little cousin was, she wouldn't make it through the initial bloodbath but you'd been wrong, she had survived the bloodbath and she'd been so strong even after losing both her allies. You didn't understand how she'd done it, you supposed she'd just gone into survival mode to get through the tragedies that didn't seem to end for her. You remember watching as she was forced to saw through her own arm, the screams you will never be able to forget still haunt you at night as you lie in your bed. Her death, of course, had not come quickly, no, it never could come quickly to her. Instead, you were forced to watch as she lay there, the life blood she so desperately needed spilling onto the earthen ground as the other careers fought, as if her life meant nothing to them, which it probably didn't. Your hands wrapped around the lighter you normally carried in your pocket as you exited the house, unable to stay there any longer than you already had and you hurried away from sight. You were unsure of just where you were going but you knew anywhere was better than here. Moss, I'm sorry, I should have volunteered for you but it's too late now, you're dead. What am I going to tell your little sister? You drew up short, the memories of Moss' little sister, Briar you believed, and the innocent air she'd had the last time you'd visited. I didn't even get to say good bye You realized. You hadn't gone to the justice building after her name had been called and a sharp pang of regret stabbed at your heart like a knife, piercing your soul. You hadn't been able to think of the idea that your cousin was going into the games to face Ripred knows what. You were a coward, unable to even face your own cousin before she went off to her inevitable death. I won't ever be able to teach her to enjoy fire As your thoughts battled inside of you, your feet carried you to the one place you knew to be safe, the orchards. Today was Sunday and so you had the day off like the rest of the district and the orchards were deserted. You wanted to pay respect to your cousin, show her that now, even though she was dead, fire could be a beautiful thing. You recalled that one of the careers who had taken her life had used a flaming weapon, terrorizing your poor cousin without even knowing it. You could only imagine the fear she felt before she faded away into nothingness forever. Without thinking, you began to gather things that you could use for fuel, dead leaves, branches, anything that would make a big fire, and put it all into a pile, arranging it just right for your taste, then you pulled out your lighter, looking to the sky. "For you Moss. May your spirit be at peace and may you find comfort wherever your journey takes you." The words slipped from between your lips and somehow, they felt right to be saying them. You lit the end of the lighter and knelt down beside the pyre you had created, lighting some of the smaller pieces and watching the rest of it catch. Taking a step back, you watched the pyre go up in flames and felt a single tear streak down your face. Now she is truly free to go to the afterlife You thought, the tongues of fire dancing in your blue eyes. This was your way of saying good-bye and you didn't really care if you got in trouble, this felt right, this homage to Moss. Suddenly, you found a piece of moss on one of the trees and tore it from where it was resting peacefully, tossing it into the flames. That felt more right than just the pyre burning. It had to mean something and now it did, it meant the life of a tiny, brave girl who's life was stripped away from her too soon. |
