Gone Fishing - Vy, Gala, Matthew, Kyanite, Max and Tyren
The morning was alive. Not busy, but thriving with life. The sun's orange gaze seeping through the window as yet another warm day reveals itself. We left the window open slightly last night. It's relaxing to hear the sounds of the district. Even the monotonous drone of the mines in the distance that never seem to stop. I love the surroundings. Nature is really what I find peace in, I think. As hippy-sounding as that may be.
Today has to have something special, something new. Maybe even daring. I'm in the mood for it, but not only that - the weather is in the mood for it, for once. Sitting on the side of my bed, bare chested and in only my underwear, I debate to myself the future musings of this lovely day that's only just beginning. Anything could happen, but I feel as though through all of the hardship must come bounty. Through loss comes gain.
I look opposite me, and Alex is still fast asleep. Something has clearly tired him out, but I don't mind to know what it is. I feel a slight rift between us recently. It's as though him and I are noticing unconsciously how far we will be in a years time. Own houses, own friends. He doesn't seem to get along with mine. I think perhaps after all this time, we are finding balance in where we go with each other, who and what we share our time with. Maybe finally, after all this time, I'm getting more independent. Perhaps it's the peacekeeper academy, creating this rift. Or maybe it's just me.
When I stand, I can't help but stretch - and if a stretch doesn't look like an exorcism then it isn't worth it. I catch the figure of somebody walking outside, in the garden, and I notice it only as my cousin, Tara. We all live in the same house now, since we moved. One large house. Not at all mansion like, or rich appearing. It's new though, and new is good for everybody. I pretend I didn't see her and walk into the small en suite bathroom Alex and I have in our room. It's not a pretty room at all. It's dull and white, black flooring. A shower about arms length away from the toilet, and even that's only arms length away from the sink, that's about half that length from the door. It's quite cramped. Above the sink, there's a mirror, and this is where I spend my mornings it seems. My usual tools all lined out - razor, hair clippers, hair wax, toothbrush and paste. One by one I make use of all of them. With the razor, I don't shave close at all. I like to keep some there, stylishly or simply out of laziness, I don't know which one. Same with my hair clippers except I don't touch the top. In this district, it's yourself or the hair dressers, and I wouldn't trust someone else with my hair... It's kind of vital.
When I've had my shower and got changed into my clothes - some slim fit grey jeans and a darker t-shirt - I head straight downstairs to make my own food. Usually, we'd have a nice family meal, but today is the day that my dad, my uncle, Alex and some others of the family are going to the mines for the next few days to do maintenance checks and all that boring business. Thankfully, I got out of doing it somehow. It's just me, Max, Tara and my mum who's going to be at the table this morning, the rest are getting their precious shut-eye. "Morning. Sleep well?" My mum asks me, her hair somehow always in the same style as always. Perfectly arranged like a flower bed. "Yeah. Dreamt about something weird though. Everyone had pizza except for me, and nobody would give me any. You're all pricks, according to my unconscious." I joke with my mum, because I know she likes the jokes in the morning. It's nice to have this alone time with the few people I'd call my closest family. I take a seat at the table, which is in the same open room as the kitchen. The light beams in from the french doors that lead into the garden where Tara must be. I look over my shoulder to see who's coming, as I hear footsteps, and it's Max. He gives me a little salute, and takes a seat next to me. "Reporting for duty, ma'am." He tells my mum, who is his aunt. She turns back to give a smirk. "Aye aye." She says, still preparing the morning breakfast of beans on toast. I couldn't ask for anything better to be honest. It must only be... seven o'clock? Something like that. It's such a beautiful day, though. "Did you sleep well?" She asks him, repeating her line from me. "Nope." He says simply, carelessly. "Tara snores, apparently." He's never had to share a room with somebody it seems.
After we've had our meals, conversation moves to and from what to do today. Many little ideas crop up; go fishing, go to the gym, sit in and watch a movie. All of them sound great, but none of them include my other friends. Matthew, Kyanite, Vy... I know that I should do something with at least one of them. Maybe all of them?
"Hey Max, got any wise ideas?" I ask him as we start talking about what to do today. "Well... I was thinking about something. It's a long shot, though." I raise a brow at him. "Well, go on..." He looks as though he's recalling some master plan before he then opens his mouth to speak. "Well... You know at the hospital, when I stole your can? I thought then, randomly, that we don't spend much time doing nice things. Like fishing and all that, like we used to. I was thinking maybe we could go camping?" I nod at him, but he continues. "I mean, not just you. Kyanite, Matthew... Maybe even that girl from your dorm." I nod again. "That actually sounds like a great idea. I'd love that. We could go fishing outside the fences..." I hush my voice a little, my mum is in the other room now but she'd go mad if she heard. "...In the woods." I continue. "I still have those tents, from when we were little?" He suggests. My face lights up, I can feel it. I've never been so excited for something like this. Me and my friends have never went out and done something like this, and I'd get a chance to get to know them so well. "What about... evening entertainment?" I ask, though when I look at him he seems to have taken the ruder distortion of that instead of my actually meaning. I kick him from under the table with a smirk. "No. I meant drinks." He nods at me. "I know, I know. I can handle that."
It's about eight o'clock now, and I'm on my way outside with Max to check the garage outside. When we packed, this is where we left all of the things that would never be put to use in the house. There's loads of boxes, but Max himself did most of the work with Jasen, a distant cousin. "Here." He says, delving into a box full of rags and all kinds of stuff. He pulls out two quite big wrappings inside a bag. The clatter of poles can be heard from them, and other things like pegs or whatever you could imagine to be in them. I grab hold of them, and they're quite heavy actually. I didn't expect them to be so. "This is just great." I say... Because it is. It's perfect. This is going to be so much fun. "You get the drinks then, right?" I clarify with him because taking the tents out. I think there's two, though one might have two and one may have another. I don't know. Feels like two. I use one hand to open the boot of the car and I throw them into the boot and slam shut the door again.
We'll be using the car to pick the others up, if they want to go, that is.
A while later, Max comes out with a crate of beer cans, but that's all. "That it?" I ask him. "It's all I could beg for, sorry mate." I shrug, it's better than nothing. The rest will surely have some. He puts it in the back and I get into the driver's seat, starting the car. It's not long since I passed my little test, but it sure feels good to be able to drive. I don't put on my seat belt, I'm that much of a cool kid (cue shades). In the passenger seat, Max puts on the radio. Suddenly 'Walking on sunshine' comes on and I grin at him, pushing down hard on the pedal, the car flying out of the driveway and onto the country road.
I... can't help but sing along. "I'M WALKING ON SUNSHINE. WOAH!" He yells as loud as he can. "I'M WALKING ON SUNSHINE." I join him. "AND DON'T IT FEEL GOOD?!" We yell in unison. I'm not speeding, but boy am I driving this thing fast down this one single dirt road.
We get further into town and I slow the car down. It took a little while to get into town from our house. We have everything in the back - clothes, drinks and the tents. Maybe the others can pitch in? If they're going that is. I think Max even packed the fishing rods? I don't know. It's all in the boot. Max gets his phone out and puts in some digits, I don't know who's they are.
He lets it ring until there's a picking up on the other end. "Hey, it's Max. You okay?" He asks her. It'll be Kyanite, no doubt. That'll save us having to wait. Maybe she could tell Vy and whoever else she wants to come? "I was just wondering if you'd like to come out for the weekend with me and Ty. We're going camping. Not just us, Matthew as well hopefully. Invite whoever you like, but it'd be great to have you come along too." He speaks, full of enthusiasm.
As the call ends, we pull up at Matthew's house. I leave Max in the car as I go to the door and chap it a couple of times.
