I had finally escaped the hot box of my tiny house for the day to go out and explore the district, now heading down one of the dozens of dirt roads snaking away from the top half of the coal plant. I hadn't had a particular destination in mind, kicking a few rocks along and stirring up the dusty yellow clay dirt as I went along. Although, now my thoughts seemed to drift toward who lived along the path I was taking. After realizing some more of my rowdy friends were close by; I walked double time to get towards their own house for a chance of the action. These particular boys were known for their parties once the sun sank below the coke towers, as if it were an official starting time for the fun. Now, however, the sun was still a shave above the creaking elevators to the west, so I knew I'd have a little time to talk and shoot the bull before they got down to business.
In less than 5 minutes I was through the creaky screened door on the back door of Slag's house,calling in as I kick a bit of mud off my boots " Any one at home?" my voice crackling and popping as normal. Although I could hear people inside, something was a bit off; there was a higher voice there , that I knew belonged to a girl and I surely didnt want to walk into anything.

I awoke this morning with a large hole in my shirt. A joint still caught up in the smoldering fabric. Putrid scents of burned paper and fabric intermingle with the grime which seemed to always coat District Twelve. The sun had already begun to sink low below the horizon before my eyes peeled open. And still, my vision refused to come into any semblance of focus for at least five minutes after.

My cheek stuck to his skin, an unpleasant tugging sensation occurring as I untangled myself from the much older lad. Jerome. I can't help but smile as light footsteps lead me into the bathroom adjacent to the couch which my best friend lay. I was not oblivious to the rumors that he and I were more than "just friends". They're quite amusing, really, I'd never be able to love that man in any other way than platonically. He's seen my scars and skeletons, something I'd rather keep secret from anyone who I work to impress.

The door creaks gently as I pull it open, slipping between the small opening as to not inconvenience any other house occupants. I couldn't remember whose house this happened to be, names tend to get lost after nights of constant partying. School and family thrown to the wolves. My hands brace either side of the sink, pulling back the frazzled mane of blonde hair which covered my face. Brown eyes streaked with bright red veins, lips chapped and pale. "Fuck me." The frustrated whisper leaves me without so much as a second thought. A party, much larger than the one which had taken place the night prior, was expected to happen in mere hours. There was no way I could look like this for such an event.

A hairbrush is tugged through coarse strands, eyes tearing as tangled strands are pulled from my scalp. I knew they'd be waking any second now, to ready the drinks and the joints before our guests arrived.

"Merc?" speak of the devil. I can't quite place a name to the voice, but it doesn't much matter at this point.

"Coming." I force my voice to take on a singsong tone, bare feet sticking to the ground as they traversed worn wood floors. Not once does my mind rest on the faces of my family. Not once to I wonder whether they've begun to worry, my absence now bordering on two days. I try to convince myself that I do not care whether they've begun to search for me, try not to smile at the thought of them dragging me tooth and nail back to the house. Where they'd lecture me, and tell me off. Even take away the few privileges I possessed. Some sign to show they cared.

Alas, I didn't think of them. Of my brothers and sisters, even of my mother and father. I thought of the smoke, wafting from the room in front of me. Of the boys sitting crosslegged in a circle, a glass bottle seated in the center. "Hey, wanna spin the bottle?" Jerome's tone is teasing, I make sure to ram my shoulder into his as I take a seat.
"I'd like to see you spin the fucking bottle."

His hand cups my face playfully "Oh honey, you'd have to pay extra to see that."

"Fuck you."

And then another voice breaks through the teasing, and I take the opportunity to kick the green glass under a seat. "Anyone home?"

The party has just begun.

I roll my eyes heavily as I hear no response to my scratchy call into the house. The whole area smelled of sweat, weed and various types of alcohol sure to be permeating the walls by this point; but it was an odd sort of dank but sweet smell.After finally slamming the door I call " Come on,Jer.. I know you're in there." my voice crackling with the steps I took towards the back of the house.Jerome was a friend of a friend, and I could see the curls that topped his head over the worn out couch between I and the next room over.However, I had gone to see Slag, or Samuel Lester as he was listed in the books at the court house. Mostly petty crimes as drunk in public or drug possession, but there was a certain thrill about even being in his presence. I knew the rest of his friends were much the same, and after being trapped inside for so long I was dying for some adventure and the cheap thrills they were sure to bring. Every time before this there had only been boys here; sure some girls had hung around from the night before a few times, but they were usually gone before this time of day. I was surprised to see a girl almost in Jerome's lap.So as I sit down and crook an eyebrow in her direction, I ask " Who the hell are you?" my spotty voice getting a chuckle from the few in the circle already passing around another joint to start things off. Knowing that I became quite another person when I got high or drunk, I would have liked to known atleast the names of the main group I would be there with. Sure, I could name off all the boys there on a short list, this girl started me and it was clear in my tone of voice and body language this threw me of. Especially the way she looked; with ratty hair and blood shot eyes, hung on a thin figure. Not to say I didn't have my own scars, especially the large purple one gracing my neck, but hers were of a different caliber entirely.They looked as if she meant them to be there, and kept adding on by the day. Along with that, the way she dressed was a bit shocking to me too; her shirt barley came over her bra and her shorts barley covered her ass that was parked on the floor. I dressed much as the boys did, in long tight pants and short sleeve shirts, but mine baring a slightly dipped collar; as if I had anything to show really.
