Things started off well for Alice, Europa, and especially Lux, who managed to claim the first kill of the games on the girl from District Eleven, Ailis. Kaiser, being the career from One he was, also got a kill quickly, claiming the life of Wesley seconds after Ailis died. Being the sister of a victor was pressure Katerina could handle with ease, and she stepped out of her brother's shadow when she finished off the boy from Twelve. Lux was back, and this time he had managed to bring down the girl from Two, a feat that shocked everyone. Katerina was right behind him with another kill of her own against Sarah Strauss, which ended District Twelve's chances of winning. It seemed Lux is in some kind of rage, and when Kaiser targeted him, he somehow managed to defy the system yet again by beating the boy from One to shreds. His ally, Europa, killed the boy from Two, Icarus Lahey, making Two the second district with no chances of a victor. Lux took a moment to congratulate her and failed to see the boy from Ten sneaking up behind him. Before he could do anything to defend himself, there was a blade buried in his back and he claimed the last death of the bloodbath.

Sophie, being the only remaining member of the career pack, ran away as soon as she saw things going south for her alliance. She was terrified, and worse than that, she had just witnessed the death of her own brother. With a new determination she didn't realize she could have, she opted to build several traps in the middle of the night rather than sleep, since she wouldn't have been able to anyway. At first she thought they were all useless, but when she heard the screams of Alice Sullivan, she was proven wrong. The girl's ally had also gotten trapped, but only minor injuries had occurred. Sophie tried to escape, but Europa eventually caught and killed her.

Skid, Icarus, and Ophelia were all starving when Icarus suggested they put up a few snares. They traveled along the land, stopping every now and again to build a trap then moving on. For a moment, they had actually forgotten the situation. It was almost like they were just three friends hunting, but that all came to an end when a huge land-slide claimed both Skid and Icarus's lives.

Beatrice, Gavin, and Rowan ran for hours upon hours, though in such harsh conditions, it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do. Each of them quickly found themselves parched to a point of immobility, and from where they were standing, there was no sign of water for miles. It was only a matter of time until one of them died, it just so happened to be Beatrice that did so first. Sponsors seemed to finally take pity on the tributes from Seven and sent them both water canteens that saved their lives, though they were still weak and had to rest for most of the day. They decided it would be smartest to only travel at night so that it wouldn't be as hot.

Blaire had somehow gotten separated from his ally, Tobias, and ran into Europa. Since the two were both alone, they decided to work together in order to improve both of their chances of survival. Blaire shared his water, and Europa shared some rabbit meat, and the two bonded over both having had siblings perish in the hunger games and being from the same district, but their friendship was short-lived. They were asleep when Rowan and Gavin found them, and Gavin had already slit Blaire's throat before Europa was even awake. Rowan attacked her and eventually held her down so that Gavin could stab her in the stomach, effectively killing her. This brought an end of Five's chances of having a victor.

Meanwhile, Katerina and Olivia had been stalking Ellis, Roger, and Adan in hopes of scavenging some of their supplies. Eventually the two got confident enough and decided to attack them, claiming that the element of surprise would give them the upper hand. Their plan worked, and Olivia ended up killing Ellis.

At this point, the two alliances considered to be the biggest threats were the tributes from Seven, and Olivia and Katerina, since they seemed to be the most willing to cause bloodshed. A sand storm forced two two alliances toward each other, but Rowan and Gavin knew that whatever was waiting for them would be worse than facing the actual storm itself, so instead of following the orders of the arena, they fought against them, which eventually led to Gavin getting struck by lightening. Rowan managed to get them both inside a building. Coincidentally, it was the same building Katerina and Olivia were taking shelter in.

The two attacked Rowan, and she was forced to leave suffering behind Gavin so she could defend herself. Somewhere in the middle of the fight, she heard the cannon that signaled his death and this created a fury that led to her decapitating Katerina with Gavin's hatchet. Olivia managed to escape, but only barely. Rowan chased after her, still in a fit of rage after losing Gavin.

Just when Olivia thought she was safe, she was tackled down a sand dune by Rowan early the next morning. The two fought briefly, but the fight was quickly ended when Rowan stabbed Olivia in the eye, killing her instantly.

Meanwhile, Roger and Adan were beginning to feel the pressures of the games, and were constantly bickering. The two were both considering running away, but didn't know if it was the proper time to yet or not. Instead of running, however, Adan eventually decided to attack Roger then instead of later, not wanting to have to think about what was to come. Roger was a bit more emotionally damaged than he felt he should have been, but he ultimately won the fight, where he then held Adan as he passed away.

At long last, the finale had finally arrived. Most of the fans had their money on either Tobias, who had managed to avoid most of the dangers of the arena and was still in decent shape, or Rowan, who was still fuming over the loss of Gavin. The four were pushed together by another sand storm, which only awakened tender feelings within Rowan, and terrified Tobias. Roger was the first to make it to the building- a huge, empty warehouse made of stone. He hid inside and waited. Ophelia was next to arrive, and he attacked her from behind, killing her before she could fight back.

He tried the same method with Rowan when she entered, but she fought him off. The two were still in battle when Tobias arrived, though it was only for a short moment before Rowan threw an ax that lodged itself into the boy's skull. In the short time she was without her weapon, in the tiny few seconds it took her to race over to the lifeless boy and retrieve the hatchet she had gotten from Gavin, Roger was able to attack and kill her, ending the hunger games and claiming the title as his own.
