: sweat of my brow :
: Sebastian Eams : 17 : District Nine :
I could hear the pencils scratching against paper. I walked down the halls of District Nine elementary school. My feet his the concrete hallway paths as grubby faces peered out of classroom windows after me. Teachers rapped for attention. I kept walking. My arms ached from carrying the wooden crate all the way from the neighboring factory where I worked.
Why should I be here? I already did my time here every day. Not this exact school but the high-school next to it. My too-long black hair stuck to my forehead by sweat as I kicked open the slightly ajar door to classroom twelve. They probably left it like that because of the godforsaken heat. District Nine Schools don't get air conditioning. They don't get much of anything, really.
The kids obviously did not want to be here and I didn't blame them. Their mousy little eyes darted to me as I let down the crate with thunk on the bare concrete floor. No wonder these kids were miserable. The windows with peeling frames were left open to let in some air but all that drench the room was a muggy spring heat. Th classroom was keep clean but i couldn't tell supplies were scarce and the kids sat three to desks made for two. They wore the poor factory clothes made of the strong plain material we made.
I picked my clipboard off the crate with oil-stained fingers. The kids stared in anticipation. Probably hoping in vain it was some sort of treat. The teacher was a young girl who couldn't be any older than me. I looked at her and then down at my clipboard.
