The sharp stench of alcohol lingers in the evening air. Dusk has come, and night is approaching rapidly. The purple and gray sky was turning into a dark, dark blue that is almost the color of obsidian. The sun has gone to sleep for the night, and now it is time fpr the stars and the moon to come out to play.
And they aren't the only ones coming out to play.
Music blares from the bars and clubs across the street. Intoxicated people stumble around the bars without direction - maybe they are trying to walk home, or maybe they just have no idea what they're doing. Some people smoke cigarettes outside, and others are just chatting, seemingly obvious to the racket a few feet away from them.
Violent movement outside of the bar catches my eye. All I can see is flying fists and a blur of blonde hair, but that is enough to let me know that there are two people fighting right outside of the bar. If they were yelling and screaming, their voices are not audible over the roaring music.
"Hey!" I yell, but I know they cannot hear me. I can barely even hear myself. "Hey!"
Without a second thought, I am darting across the street towards the bar. It only takes a few seconds to reach the fighting people, and by the time I do, I have realized that what I have done is a mistake. (But there is no turning back now.) I know that if someone recognized me as Victory Aubergine, and the word spread that I was at a bar, my parents would unleash hell upon me. I already lost the Labyrinth Game. I can't screw up again. (But it's too late, I'm gonna screw up anyway.)
Shoving the image of my angry parents to the back of my mind, I throw myself between the two warring, possibly drunk people. Adrenaline is coursing through my body as I stand between the two, who I have just now sized up. They look older and taller and stronger than I am. To me, they look like skyscrapers, although they are not much taller than me. They are absolutely daunting to me, a mere child.
"This has to stop," I say, knowing that I must look like a fool. (At the moment I don't give a damn.) "You can't fight like this, not here."
