Ma always told me to look out for others. That one's self worth is judged by how you treat another. The golden rule or something like that. That's why she opened that shop down on the corner. Buyin' dough and fruits and sticking them all together in some magical concoction. She baked all day while she wasn't a work, handing out the pastries to poor souls on the street. Didn't ask for anything in return. Said the smiles on their faces were payment enough. Sickness was what got her in the end, worked herself to the bone and them some. The chemicals she worked with poisoning her lungs and taking her life. On her death bed, she made me promise to keep goin'. Keep baking those delicious pastries for those who couldn't do it themselves. Eventually had to take on another job, in the same place as ma did, just to keep myself off the streets.
