Leslie O'Dale was born an orphan- her father left before she was born and her mother passed a few days after she was born due to an infection. Put into an community home with no other family wanting to take her in, Leslie grew up in one of the poorest provinces of District 6; where smog filled the air during the summer and crime was rife. There was nothing more she hated that life at the home, built in the heart of the slums, and always dreamed of a better life beyond the brick walls of the home. As soon as she was old enough to leave, she set off on her own path. Finding a job for a woman was difficult for a woman with poor education; and after many quarrels with her landlord about rent, she was soon she was alone on the street again. 19 and no where to go: Leslie became a street rat, living on the street, having to live off scraps she found in the bins. One cold night, as she stumble through the back alleys of old town, she found herself in the company of two females dressed in old silk dresses, shawls and high heels.
"You look cold little Duck...Why don't you come in, we don't bite" " said the first woman, who snapped her teeth together, growling, cackling at Leslie's frightened eyes.
"Bea don't scare the girl!" the second woman said, putting her shawl around the shivering Leslie "I 'pologize for my friends actions, she ain't educated properly"
Leslie nodded
"What's your name Duck??" the second woman asked
"Leslie.."
"Nice to meet ya Leslie, I'm Tasha and this is Beu"
"How old are you Lez" asked Bea
"19..." the young girl stuttered
"You need a roof over your head..." Tasha asked softly. Leslie reluctantly nodded, she knew what they were. Tasha smiled "We can give ya a good home...good money"
"Very good money" agreed Beu
"We promise we'll take care of you"
"Thanks for your time Lez, I'll see you next week yeah?"
Leslie nodded, draped across the bed, counting the money she had been paid for her services. $100, $200, $300- a sly smile spread across her face. Enough to buy some new shoes and a few drinks down at the local tavern; enough to pay for a Doctors check up. She had been working in Tasha's establishment for close to a year and a half- the money had been rolling in but it did go quickly. She had to bought her own one roomed flat, rent was $200 and after that she had to pay for food and clothing and the other necessities which left her with about $200 to spend on other things like Doctor's appointments. STD's spread like wildfire here and getting one would mean the end of her career. Leslie couldn't risk going back onto the street ever again. She said goodbye to her companion, before getting dressed to go to the Doctor's Surgery.
The appointment went just as they always went, smooth. There was no frowning, no shaking of the head, so everything was okay. The Doctor sat down, viewing her most recent test results through his glasses, as she waited eagerly for him to tell her she had the all clear.
"You're pregnant"
The world suddenly froze as those words played over in her head. Pregnant. The walls felt like they were crumbling as the words played over in her head. Pregnant. She couldn't be, Pregnant. She was always careful, she took certain days off when she was likely to get pregnant, she was always so careful. She began to sweat nervously at the thought that there was a little human growing inside her; it frightened her. She couldn't look after a baby, she wasn't in a position to look after a little baby; she didn't even know the father. She knew there were ways to get rid of it...she couldn't afford it professionally...
But they didn't work.[/i]
