O R I A N A P A R K S I woke up extra early this morning. The rest of the household is still asleep. I peek in on my brothers and they're cuddled up together on their cot. It's a funny sight to see, since they're constantly fighting when they're awake. I rummage through a drawer to find a decent pair of blue jeans and a blouse that doesn't have any holes in it. I mange to find jeans and settle on a shirt that has a barely noticeable tear on the sleeve. I still only have my one pair of shoes, so they will have to do. As I slip them on, I hear my mother start to stir so I quickly slip out the door. I wanted to make it a point to get out of the house before anyone woke up so I wouldn't be asked to do anything. No chores, no pulling apart fighting brothers. I picked out this day to dedicate to myself. I wasn't about to let anything stop that. It's been a few days since my encounter with Poppy Wood. It was short yet pleasant. She offered to teach me how to ride a horse and I would be an idiot to let that opportunity slip away. A chance to walk onto the Redwood ranch, the chance to follow up with the making of a friend and the chance to finally get in touch with my district roots and learn how to ride a horse. As I walked down the path towards Poppy's home, I felt myself jitter with anticipation. It's somewhere between being elated and being nervous. I haven't been able to speak to Poppy since the day we met, and I think I'm taking a real chance her by just showing up at her home trying to claim the offer she gave me. But how else should I go about this? The chances of just happening to run into her again is slim to none, so I have to just take this chance. She seemed nice enough to where if I'm denied, she'd just politely say no. As opposed to kicking me out and trying to punish me for trespassing on her family's land. The thought shivers down my spine. Hopefully I'm not doing anything wrong here. Is being excited so wrong? If she thinks this visit is unorthodox, then I'll just explain the misunderstanding. I finally reach the front gates of the Redwood ranch. It's beautiful here. I see how far the family's possession of the land runs and it's a breath taking sight. I feel myself get more and more nervous with every step I take towards her front door. My hand shaking as I reach up to knock. Even the door is beautiful, masterfully carved out of a gorgeous cherry colored wood. I realize how early it is and start to wonder if I should go back to the woods and wait until it's a little bit later in the day. Well, they are a bonafide actual ranch. People who work real ranches are usually up this early, right? I hear rustling inside that confirms my thought. So I muster up the courage, throw my shoulders back and knock a few times against the Redwood ranch front door. template by chelsey |
