Erebus Turner

It had been a long night for Erebus Turner. Not only had he trekked across the Arena, he did it with another tribute on his back with a canteen full of water he couldn't drink and the carcass of an animal they couldn't eat. There is nothing more horrible in this world than being two days out from your last glass of water and holding a bottle full of water that could kill you.
The anthem rang throughout the Arena but only two faces were spread across the sky. Erebus wondered what they do with the dead mutts. Leave the bodies to fester in the fake Arena sun or extract them like tributes. Do the trainers and breeders have a little anthem ceremony for the fallen beasts or do they care? Erebus knew the answer but he liked to pretend that the world wasn't quite so mean.
The third day in the Arena brought a blistering sun and nothing but dry dirt and aching bones. Stumbling up to the edge of some structure, Erebus fought to hold Nocturne up on his back until he remembered something very helpful from their time talking together in the training center.
"Vargas. Why am I carrying you if you broke the foot on your lame leg?" tired and frustrated from his lack of food, water, shelter, or any kind of comfort human beings enjoy, Erebus threw his hands to the side letting the other tribute slide off his back. A few steps forward and Erebus was lying in the dirt face first, exhausted beyond he thought possible. He was so dehydrated he thought he saw a town in the middle of the Arena- imagine that!
Wait. The buildings were not a mirage or a trick of the eye, they stood there just as solid as the mutts yesterday or the cornucopia on the first day. Propping himself up on his elbows, the boy took in the site of the deserted town. There was rubble on either side of him from structures long gone but in front of him stood a beat up wooden building with a crooked sign above the doorway that said "saloon."
Squinting, the boy could make out bottles of something on the counter inside. The could be empty, but they could hold something else! Clamoring to his feet, Erebus started for the saloon but his path was soon blocked by what Nocturne would call an outlaw.
An outlaw or a very large, very mean looking monster spider. While Erebus might have reservations about muttations that resemble the horses he so lovingly cares for back home, there was no qualm in his heart about attacking this ugly looking thing. In fact, he hoped he was making Lethe proud by not hesitating in the slightest before launching himself at the spider, ready to slice all of its legs off and let Nocturne make a hat out of them.
