I can take so much
'Til I've had enough
Richard Gertz
A gentle breeze glides over his body, causing slight bumps to form over his lanky arms. It challenges him to pull them close, to warm himself and accept that he is still alive. Richard refuses, instead, he continues on his way, heading towards the brick red building. School was something that Richard is no longer able to enjoy. He used to let his mind wander, as he imagined all the mysteries of the world, and absorbed every single fact that floated his way. Now, the school offers shelter for the refugee's of the 1st death of the 67th games. He pulls his sister closer, even though she knows he is more broken than she has ever been. His arm is not on her shoulder for her comfort, instead Rich makes his sister into a crutch, something to lean on when he is weak. It is an ever constant struggle for Richard to continue with his life, but his sister insists that he shuffles through the days, a repetitive slur of eating, school, and sleeping. Today seemed like no other for him, just an another uneventful 24 hours.
As he headed through the doorway he could barely register the ever constant whispers of my peers. Just empty wisps of air that tell of his struggle to cope with his brothers death. Cadman's death has had little impact on their day-to-day lives, instead it offers a few seconds of gossip. They have no idea of the real impact of his death. How could they? Richard despises them, their happiness and ignorance. Their glances of pity tell him just how little they truly understand. He does little to hide his anger, and lets his sister run off to her friends. At least her friends don't judge her, still too young to completely comprehend her sadness and lose. At least they don't fake it, act as if they understand, they offer a few kind looks, and perhaps a bit of support. Richard has lost his friends, because when his pure fury is coursing through is veins, nothing can keep his mouth shut.
Heading quietly to the classes for the older kids, RIchard try to push out all thoughts of his struggles. Enjoying the very temporary serenity of his mind, he allows himself to drift away. Often Richard spends his time trying to navigate through his own mind, constantly running into anger or sorrow. The serenity of this warm morning is a gift. But like all gifts received by the Gertz family, it doesn't last. In his unusually quiet mind, Rich doesn't notice the boy in front of him. He bumps into him and quickly he switches from serenity to anger. "Watch it buddy." Why he is lashing out, Richard doesn't know. All he ever understands is his current emotion, and right now, anger is his only source of information.
