The Games are terribly boring without Tiger. In her not-so-humble opinion, Cricket's mini-me was the most interesting thing to happen to the Hunger Games since... well, honestly, since Cricket Antoinette herself. Sure, the male Tribute from her District is still alive or whatever, but he's exhaustingly brutish and despite his outstanding training score, the contortionist darling of the circus underworld couldn't possibly be less enthused about him. With an over-dramatic exhalation, she glances over another Victor's shoulders at one of the countless television screens in the viewing room, confirming what she already knows: Yes, Dull Dan Johnwayne and his graceless excuse for style is still alive and so, no, she is not allowed to leave and go do something with her day that might actually prove to be interesting.
Sigh.
"Did your," the girl pauses, almost as if realizing what an awful thing she's about to say, "husband really have to take off the head of the only Tribute worth watching? Tiger had so much potential." The corners of her mouth tick into a frown which, unfortunately, has little to nothing to do with regret for her thoughtless words, lives lost, or hearts still laying on the line. Brazenly, she looks Opal Earnest in the eye and continues with what might be a joke in bad taste or, worse yet, sincere ignorance. "I'm not sure what you see in him."
Escorts, other Mentors of Victories past, and various Capitol employees mill around them. It's barely daybreak of the fourth Games day and little more is happening on screen than a few pairs of eyes opening up to discover that they have survived the night. Meanwhile, everyone here — except, perhaps, Cricket — is anxious to see what the new day will bring. Some obviously have their fingers crossed for catastrophic carnage and then... there is Opal. Even the Victor from Two has noticed how she seems to care even less for the Tributes she's supposed to be helping to Mentor than Cricket cares for Cowboy Dan, her eyes trained on all the wrong screens.
Except for yesterday. Yesterday the two of them had been focused on the same fight, their Tributes allied and fighting side-by-side, only for an opposing sword to cut that connection short. Potato Earnest. Somehow, it wasn't until he had severed Tiger's head that Cricket realized Opal hadn't been rooting for the Career alliance at all, but for her husband. Even now it doesn't quite make sense to her. It's the Games; romance isn't meant for the Arena. These are convictions she has insisted upon since walking out of the Justice Building before the Sixty-Third, leaving behind a boy who had fallen to his knees in her honor, clutching her desperately and asking for things she couldn't fathom. Asking for things she still can't fathom.
