Appearance:
Standing decently tall at six feet even, Devilyn has a slender but well defined physique. His skin is naturally fair, and tends to just get a sort of glow when he tans, though he will burn first. Dev (as his friends and family call him) is a handsome boy with sharp features, full lips, a straight nose, high cheekbones and deep brown eyes. He also has golden blonde hair trimmed fairly short. Dev's hands are a little large for him with long slender fingers and callused palms and fingers.
With both natural grace and long-practiced balance, Devilyn moves smoothly, and quickly, seeming fluid and at ease. The work he does has made him stronger than he looks. Not necessarily one to smile constantly, when Dev does grin, it lights up his face and accentuates his eyes, making them seem warm and friendly. At both school and work after school, Dev prefers to dress very casually - he works at a shop (his uncle's) that makes and repairs boats, and often wears just a pair of shorts. When Dev does dress up, his favorite color to wear is dark blue.
Personality:
Dev is a seemingly easygoing young man, who carries himself with apparent confidence - and, to look at him, why would he not be confident? Though he has many casual acquaintances, Devilyn does not make real friends easily if at all, and more often than not, he can be found spending his few idle hours alone, often walking along the beach, or sitting and carving some intricate little sculpture out of wood. In fact, though he fakes being quasi-outgoing with practiced ease, Devilyn often feels an outcast among his peers.
For a young man who has good looks, is smart enough that he makes decent grades, and has a good job, Dev hides a secret insecurity and a degree of self-loathing perpetuated by an abusive and alcoholic mother, and a cowed and meek father who does nothing to protect his son from the mother's rages and insults. Working alongside his father, who he cannot help but love but no longer respects, Dev is constantly reminded of the inadequacies of both his family and himself, including his inability to sexually desire any of the girls the way his fellow teens do - he is drawn to his own gender instead, and this is something that makes him feel even more like a freak at times.
Sometimes, at the best of times, when he is not at home, Dev can forget his home life, and reach out towards what he hopes to be someday, that is, to follow in his uncle's footsteps as a shipwright; one of his few unadulterated joys is being trusted to test the smaller craft for seaworthiness by himself, and he cherishes those moments sailing alone on the bright sea. Dev's easygoingness is tested however if he is bullied, or tormented; he has a long patient temper, but when he is finally pushed too far, he will explode, and end up in a fight with whomever caused this reaction; he wins these fights more often than not.
History:
Devilyn was born into an already shaky relationship; his mother, Hainah, barely worked, not even being much of a housekeeper, and his father, Joucum, was beaten down by a life in which his natural reticence had him always coming second to his own brother, who inherited the family business of boat building and repair despite the fact that Joucum was older. By the time Devlin was a toddler, Hainah was drinking regularly, and when she was drunk (or hungover) she would berate her tiny son as she did her husband. This behavior pattern was observed by many, and Dev's uncle Aryth started to take more and more care of the boy as he grew old enough to begin working after school in the boatyard.
Feeling for his uncle the respect he had soon lost for his own father, Devilyn looked up to the man, and when he was older, started working for him as much as he was allowed, trying to be at home with his abusive mother as seldom as possible; he even started sleeping at the boatyard many nights rather than return home to face the harridan. Though working for his brother should have provided Joucum and his family with a better than average living, Hainah mostly drinks the money away, though Devilyn now refuses to share his own income with his family, hiding his money so that he can eat properly despite whatever his parents do.
Uncle Aryth supports Dev's efforts to take care of himself and seperate himself from his unhealthy family, though he is a busy man and has little time to spend praising or nurturing the boy outside of teaching him his trade. The Hunger Games, which Dev has avoided being chosen for over the past four years, looms yearly over the young man, as well as over all his peers, a brief terror followed by the sweet relief of not being chosen, though he hopes that if he were chosen, one of the careers would volunteer to take his place.
