God, it had been a long week. And a long month, and a long couple of months...
Brody banished the tiredness of the thought with a sip of coffee, which had long since gone cold. He was padding barefoot around his barracks packing a bag with the few belongings he would need for the long weekend. There was some federal holiday that had warranted a 3-day weekend, but all Brody cared about was that this was a prime opportunity for a trip home. Regrettably, he'd missed his father's birthday a couple of weeks ago, having had to cancel his trip after being assigned as Dunham's trainer and being whisked off to be trained as an instructor. The birthday present he'd gotten sat on his bed, still tastefully gift-wrapped in blue paper with some kind of gold pattern on it, with a tag denoting it was from Brody, to his father. He supposed he could have sent it through the mail, but Brody didn't trust the mail workers as far as he could throw them.
It had been an awfully long time since he was home last... Brody was fast approaching his 21st birthday, which made him realize he hadn't seen his parents in something like 4 months. He had been away longer, having been on deployments, but he tried his best to visit once a month. Being an only child meant he had his parents' undivided attention; when he was younger, it was smothering. Now that he was a grown man... he looked forward to the occasional visit.
Brody still had plenty of time before he had to catch his train; he stripped down, taking a leisurely shower and patiently counting the minutes until he could let the stonefaced facade crack. Being an instructor was exhausting.
By the time he'd dressed, finished packing and was walking briskly down the halls of the Academy towards the front gate --and receiving very odd stares from some of the recruits who were staying for the weekend, instructors in civvies was an oddity to see-- his hair was still wet, but he was too impatient to get to the train station and that much closer to home. Brody had even forgone shaving his face that morning and was sporting a shadow on his face, making him look older than he really was; he tried not to look too much the part of a Peacekeeper when he was on liberty with family.
On a whim, he took a detour through the recruits' barracks, opting to pass by Dunham's room. He expected that his recruit had taken off for the weekend as quick as he could, but it couldn't hurt to check; Brody had found himself becoming especially attentive of the kid after the... incident at the pool.
