Sorry it's short, I kinda ran out of steam cuz it's close to bedtime.
- "Yes, your strength." Brody rubbed his chin remembering how Matthew had nearly choked him out when he'd had his... episode in the pool. "Knowing how to throw your weight around counts too."
That much, Brody had to know in spades; he wasn't sure how obvious it was to most people, but for his build he was a decidedly willowy 160 pounds. Momentum was often the deciding point between himself and a much larger opponent (case and point, his father)... Though that did give him more than a few ideas how a fight with Nolan and Matthew might be significantly different.
He slapped the flat of his sword against his own shield again, watching Matthew intently as they circled each other; it didn't take long for his student to make his move, opting to swing his sword and thrust with his shield at nearly the same time. Brody punched his shield right into Matthew's sword, jarring it so much that he nearly let go of the handle; it would have been easy to take advantage of him fumbling the sword and disarm him, but this was more of a lesson than a fight. Matthew stepped back, regaining control of the sword and facing Brody.
"Matthew." Nolan chimed in from the sideline, "Remember that the sword and shield are an extension of your arm. Don't think of it as making a strike, imagine it as a punch, or reaching out with your hand."
Brody lowered his shield slightly to add on.
"Remember when we first sparred at the Academy?" He reminded him, "You were watching my moves to figure out where I was going to go, whether I was going to punch or kick or dodge, looking for openings. It's the same thing here; the only difference is, one arm is longer and the other is wider."
Grappling was absolutely permissible in their fights, and both father and son agreed it made things more interesting when the fight didn't stop at someone being disarmed. Brody beckoned at Matthew to continue.
