She was quiet. Twitchingly quiet, like the tail of a hunting tiger. Ooh. A tail. She'd love having a tail. She could swish it back and forth and it would be awesome.

laughter. It had been in the back of her mind, rising and growing and showing and being beaten back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and pushed under the bed until the night time when it could crawl out and sit on her stomach like her cat and stare at her so she couldn't sleep but she'd sleep anyways just to spite it.

The steps of the school were made of the kind of rough, scratching concrete that rubbed against your skin and quickly removed flesh from little kneecaps and elbows. She didn't much care for it, but she didn't want to move on to work from school just yet. Wait. Did she work today? What day was it?
She didn't think she worked today now that she thought about it. Even more reason to not go home. To not have to deal with her brothers and her mother and looking after the baby and explaining why she wasn't at work and wasn't trying to figure out how to train to maybe someday volunteer. Why was it her job? Eleph was the oldest. He was still living at home. Sure he had work, but why couldn't he be the one to bring honor and power and glory forever (amen) to thedistrict family?
So she was stuck. She didn't want to stand up and go home. She didn't want to go to the library or the shop or the stables or her home. Especially home. They didn't understand what it was like to stay up into the odd hours of the night, staring into the eyes of a tiger who didn't let her sleep.
She didn't know why it wouldn't let her sleep. It just wouldn't. It had gotten better. At least the nightmares were gone. But occasionally, the tiger would slip out of her mind and into the waking world and hurt other people and she had to keep the tiger in because daddy wouldn't want Tiger to hurt people and would want her to take care of Eleph and Froggie and Kat and Squirrel because mommy wasn't doing well and...
Her mind hurt.
