Hannah, Pokey, Diane and Spring all woke up at 8 o'clock on the button. And Thimble should know. She's the one who woke them up, after being up at 6 o'clock to pack Momma and Papa's lunches by herself.
Consequently, she was tired.
Hannah, Pokey, Diane and Spring all ate a breakfast of stale toast (no butter), a spoonful of egg and a quarter of a slice of bacon. And Thimble should know. She's the one who made it for them.
Consequently, she got a single slice of toast.
Hannah, Pokey, Diane and Spring all took warm, five-minute showers to begin their day. And Thimble should know. She's the one who timed them.
Consequently, she got a cold two-minute shower.
Hannah, Pokey, Diane and Spring all left the house to wander the neighborhood with their friends (since there was no school today), to be back at dinner. And Thimble should know. She watched them turn their backs and leave.
Consequently, she had to take care of Holly all alone.
Thimble didn't think about any of this, though. She didn't even realize it had happened. She was used to it. The responsibilities of being the oldest. It was her job. Her duty. Her higher calling.
But, luckily, Holly was just ready to go down for a nap as the time for Sunny to come over drew closer.
And, boy, was Thimble excited. Leon had won! He'd survived! As soon as she'd seen him, she'd thought he was the bees knees. Super handsome. She couldn't stop thinking and talking about him. Her dinner talk discussion was practically limited to, "Did you know Leon blahblahblahblah?" And her father would look up from the watery soup they often ate, one eyebrow raised and say, "Uhhh... no," for the rest of the family.
Thimble would sigh, as though only she could understand Leon's appeal (which her family would probably agree on, especially her father).
But now, she could gush about him to Sunny (like she already had) and they could play with Holly and she wouldn't be stuck alone in this house. Alone.
Thimble hated alone above all other things.
Consequently, she was tired.
