Ana stared at her watch before resuming with her patrol. The white uniform was tight on her body, but the material was supposed to be flexible in the case that something went wrong, something that was likely to happen with so many people in District 4. It was the Panem Olympics, an event Ana had found ridiculous and impossible to monitor. Most of the peacekeepers who were in training before the Olympics were brought into District 4 which coincidentally was also Ana’s home district. Not many of the other Peacekeepers were from District 4, but she had fought tooth and nail to get a recruitment position and out of District 4. And yet she was back in District 4, again as a Peacekeeper.
It was nice to be back in a white uniform. As a child, she was somewhat of a runt with her tiny structure and was often susceptible to bullying, but donning the white uniform meant that she had power over those who had tormented her when she was younger. Still, she preferred the relaxed clothing she was allowed in the interrogation room. If anything, there was no helmet she would have to don whenever she went outside. Perhaps in the case of a riot, the helmet would be of great use, but in the downtime of curfew, the greatest criminal was the boyfriend who snuck off to his girlfriend’s house.
She couldn’t wait for the Olympics to be over so she could complete her training and go back to the interrogation room. That was what she specialized in, not yelling at dumb teenagers who thought curfew was only a concept and not a practice. She wasn’t even important enough to give these children a beating; that was left to her superiors. She merely had to drag them by the ear to the justice building and let the others deal with them. She preferred dealing with hardened criminals, idiots who had information stored that she had to work to retrieve. It’s only a few more days, she thought to herself, wondering if it would be too much to go in and have a drink.
As she contemplated grabbing a quick drink before remembering that the bars would be closed after curfew, a dark shadow passed by the corner of her eye and she turned her head to see a retreating figure heading towards the beach. Grimacing, she placed the helmet back on her head before stalking off after the figure. “Hey!” she shouted at what looked like a girl as she picked up her pace to get closer in case she did have to subdue the girl. “You can’t be going to the beach. It’s after curfew.” Was this girl not listening to her? “Go back to your home!” Angry, she moved her legs faster until she almost caught up with the girl.
