RUNNING: 400M SPRINT

Welcome to the 400m running event of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character on the starting blocks and running, and then paste the code [*roll=2000+5000] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 5064 is read as 50.64 seconds)

The competitor with the lowest time wins this event. Times for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

This was my thing. This was defiantly my thing. A smile paints my lips as I stretch, my long legs spread out in front of me as I lean forwards, my lean body prepared for the small run in plan for today. I was an assassin after all, I was trained to be light on my feet, to be fast swift and agile. I was trained to be fast and no one would be able to catch me today. All of them will be eating my dust.

Climbing to my feet I walk over to the start point. A beep sounds and I take my position. I look to my left, then to my right, taking in the people who would be running in my shadow and give a small bark of laughter. Oh boy, this was going to be fun!

Yesterday she placed 7th out of 9th, lowest out of District 1. She could feel some of the kids from her district staring at her, mocking her behind her back. The edges of her vision vibrated with whispers of mauve and indigo. Bette didn't care though, so it didn't really matter. Let them talk, they're not important.

In track, Bette runs for herself, and herself alone.

The 400 meter is a face-off between Districts 1 and 2 though, and even Bette is not immune to this. Aja's in the crowd though, shouting as loud as the sneers from D2.

Bette smiles, waves. She hasn't done that in a long time. Most days are spent staying up all night, hammering over a new trinket for someone else to play with, or spent dashing around the district, leaping off of walls and tumbling through passageways. She's never told Aja this of course, her cousin just sees her as always tired, always sullen.

Aja can't know, Aja can never know of the things that go on behind closed doors, planned between cousins and shipped out of the antiques store. She's the face of the shop after all, and she doesn't deserve the stress.

Bette cracks her neck, the sound sending turquoise to her vision. The eight competitors line up at the start and all she can hear is her breaths, a dark purple that dances across her eyes.

Do your best, that's all he would have wanted.

The gun goes off with a brilliant gold, and she dashes.

My entire life has been spent running. Ever since my parents left, all I did was run. I spent my life on the streets trying to raise my sister. It was hard, but we managed. We ran from the peacekeepers, from angry citizens we made messed with, so I believe it's safe for me to say, I know how to run. It wasn't surprising when I saw I was going to compete in the four hundred meter run. It's nothing compared to what it could be. I know I'm capable of running extremely fast, it all depends on the mood I'm experiencing for the day. I want to show people what it's like to spend their life running though. It's important for people to realize that. I lean forward in the blocks prepping to run as fast as I possibly can. I want to win because maybe, just maybe, my parents are out there watching. I want to make them proud. I want them to see what I'm capable of. Maybe if they see me, they'll return home. That's what I want. The moment the gun fires, I'm off my blocks and sprinting as fast as I can.

I stand the start block, waiting, just waiting for the race to start. Everyone around me doing the race seemed older than me, but to be honest, when has age ever stopped anyone? Take for example Aranica Petros. She won the games at 12, for Ripred's sake! I shake out my arms and relax, waiting, just waiting for the gun to fire. Really, I don't understand why we have to wait for a gun to fire, cos everyone just gets bored and stuff. And fire it does. I jump out of the stand, hoping, just hoping that this will go as well as the long jump.

I've been running my entire life, in some way or another. Most of the time it's physical running. I'm better at that than training with knives and swords. Removing myself from the possibility of danger sits far better with me than actively battling danger. I'm sure mother and father wouldn't agree. We're Careers, after all. Helena has always been the fighter in our family, though. She was always better at it, stronger in her will than I was. I avoid confrontation at all costs, but she'll let herself be dragged in until she can rip things apart in turn. I envy her strength.

It pays off to be the runner, however, in instances like this. Where Helena has power, I have speed. Informal races round the district and training sessions can hardly prepare me for this, though. I'm up against some of the fastest runners of all the Career districts. I don't expect much. Regardless, I line myself up with the others, lowering myself until I'm almost completely on the ground. My feet are lined up to push off and my muscles are tense, waiting for the starting shot. It spikes through me like a lance and I push off, throwing everything I can into this one race.

Strange how I find myself flying through the world after a night of no sleep.

Maybe it's because when I sleep I do all the sprinting and being chased in my head. I fall through landscape after landscape, all a blur of shadows and shapes, but the one thing that stays consistent is that I am running as fast as I can from something I don't even know exists. So when I stay awake at night and feel the hours take their toll I am a spring being wound up, itching to burst and take flight. (It's in my blood, burning and bright. Running is all I've ever known.) So I fly across the finish line, arms stretched out in delight, and taste victory that courses through my veins.

Running is release. There are wings hissing out from the spaces between my bones, feathers sawing through muscle, and flight bursting through my skin as my heels kick up dust. Each step echoes through my ears and ricochets around the hollow places I hide within me. It's terrible. I love it anyway. When I let go like this, everything else disappears until time and space and the whole world falls away into a blur and I could be anyone, anywhere.

Most often I become a time traveler and hurtle backwards into my days as a refugee, always running away from... everything. All I knew was how to go and so I did. I left my own brother for dead and more than one lover in the muddled green of the forest, in places I couldn't return to even if I tried. And I won't. I won't go back, not anymore. No one is enough to make me do that. It's not for lack of love, because if I even know what that is, then I know that I've felt it: for Auggie, for Zane, for Kade. The past has not been kind to me, however, so the only thing that's left is to go forward and there are these moments when I'm running like a madwoman and my wings threaten to carry me away upon the terrifying exhalation of love's ghost and I think I can see the finish line —
