DECATHLON: DISCUS THROW

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throw, and then paste the code [*roll=825+4100] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 4509 is read as 45.09 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread; however, the overall decathlon standings will be updated on a separate thread.

After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

She wishes that she could say that she wasn't doing this for any reason but for her adopted mother signing her up for the stupid event. However, she cannot. With all things, her competitive side was crawling upwards out of her gut, bringing flame up her throat, making her care about this stupid practice more than she wanted to. Somehow she was actually beginning to really care how well she did and half of her knew it was less the fact that the stupid Shore name was tacked onto her face and more to simply prove a point. A lot of careers were a hell of a lot of talk with nothing to show for it. Amazonite wanted to prove that she wasn't just talk, she was a jungle of expertise, a chaotic mastermind when it came to being a career.

She had lived and breathed the path of the warrior for her entire life, to be prodded at, talked down to for her short stature and scary features was a constant source of annoyance for her. She knew that her looks were not optimum, especially not to the Grimm standards, but here was something that she triumphed in. Here was something that she could say was her forte. Throwing things and being a badass was her specialty.

When she stepped up to throw her disks she completely ignored her competitors, especially Circe Lyon, who had been giving her the stink eye since yesterday. Where Amazonite was not one to bother with make-up, Circe had been showing up everyday in full palette, looking like she was more interested in a fashion show than actually doing the events. Today however, the other girl was looking oddly incomplete. "Oh Lyon, is that you?" she asked, squinting at her in an over the top manner, voice laced with sugar, "I thought that an incredibly unfortunate looking dog had waddled it's way onto the pitch."

Her father had always taught her not to stoop to such levels, to get the person back by cutting all their fingers off later or something. However, Amazonite had not inherited his quiet patience.

With a grunt, she tossed the discus into the air, watching with pleasure as they flew much farther than the girl's from Distict Two.

I'm sure to most onlookers as well as my opponents I seem insignificant. I know they pity me. It makes me angry. I am Ray Baitwell, I am capable, I am strong, and I am not some puppy who got kicked one too many times and needs to be coddled back to health. They are attributing my failures to my lack of emotional strength - I can see it.

Screw them. Just screw them all!

I will eventually prove them all wrong. I will prove I am something more. Maybe not now, but eventually. Some day, my name will go done in the history books. And I twirl as I was taught to and toss the discs one after the other, ignoring the score until the very end.

Day Three, and she was starting to look it. There was really only so much foundation could do, especially since covering the purple shadows beneath her eyes meant caking it into her laugh lines, which had deepened into crevices after half her soul had died. She overdid the eye makeup to compensate, and the whole effect was witchy. She'd scrubbed her face so hard to remove the failed attempt that her cheeks and lips came away rubbed raw, flushed. She flicked some mascara on, swiped on a coat of gloss, and bared her face to the world.

After all, she might as well disappoint everyone at once. Discus throwing was not her sport. It required a core strength she would never possess, especially against larger, stockier competitors. She folded her arms as Amazonite slung one after the other, marking the earth with her skill. After Day Two, it was clear three of them wanted the gold more than others. And she wasn't about to let a Shore snatch the glory from her. "Nice work out there. Must be just like throwing a golf ball for you." Circe smirked, letting her gaze drop to Amazonite's waist, before she moved into position behind the Baitwell boy. Plenty of orphaned siblings in this competition. Ray was impossible. Circe hadn't spoken to him once, and if he was angry or excited or depressed, who knew? He always looked the same.

Elya Johnwayne was a different matter. A mystery, with her eye patch and ferocity. Circe couldn't help but be drawn to her anger, even as she felt the tide of favor turning to her. She'd have to be careful not to like her too much, when she was still the competition.

She looked back, until she caught Elya's gaze. "Going to make today interesting for me too?"

She threw. And threw. And never improved.

The Decathlon was slowly transforming into a disaster, as my position slowly sank into last place. I was beneath the others, and I had no clue how to rise back up. My face is sullen, eyes constantly downcast, and mouth straighter then a ruler. I refuse to allow the weariness seep past my face, and try to remain confident as we begin the discus throw.

With heart in gut, I try to ignore the fear and worry firmly planted in my gut. There was true worry that my family would be more then willing to push me out of their lives without a backwards glance. There wasn't much left for me to do, only to accept that I would forever be a second glance, the child who is loved equally but liked the least.

As I step up to the circle, large plate in hand, my gut fills with an unimaginable amount of nerves and anxiety. I try to push this explosion of emotions from the volcano that is me. I try to stay intently focussed on metal disk in my hand, and with a firm step and an arm straightened, I am ready for victory.

As I spin, the world blurs, and all that remains is a single frame of clarity, when I launch the discus into the air.

Yay I like throwing things... at your head

Now this next event was one Xander had personally been waiting for ever since he signed up for the decathlon. The discus throw just seemed to exotic and so entertaining that Xander could hardly wait for the event this long. Luckily today was finally the day he got to try it out. Sure Xander had no experience with this event, other than warming up at the moment. But he still was eager to see how he did, also he was sure no one else could possible practice discus all their lives, could they. Oh it didn't matter, he would see it through that he beat them anyway whether they trained for this or not. Xander also decided he would stick with the same tactic he had been executing these entire Olympic Games, maximum determination and complete focus. He knew he had some ground to catch up on due to his stumbles along the way, and who knows maybe this was where he would come out on top. He knew there was only one way to find out, and that was to take his turn when it came.

Sure enough it did come and he took his place in the spot light. He could he the never ending rumble of the crowd and he could feel the never sleeping eyes of the cameras. Yet he forced himself to cast them all away, to leave them in a place he was not. Here he would show to all of Panem and president Snow himself just how strong and cunning a "little" boy like him could be. With his determination blazing and his focus tuned in to his task at hand Xander smirked and let the discus fly from his hand, and hopefully towards a brighter tomorrow.

Discus was a touch different than the other throwing events, and all the more impractical for it. The disc was hurled as far as possible with centripetal force of a full rotation — meaning you couldn't really tell precisely what you were aiming for. And what was the point of that? It wasn't as if you'd ever spin at someone who was rushing you unless you wanted to die right then and there.

It was no matter, though; if Elya Johnwayne wanted to win this competition — which she did — she'd need to do well in this event, along with the others. Which meant she needed to spin. The competitor to beat for this competition was Circe Lyon, a wily blonde with a checkmark under brother-volunteered-and-died just as Elya had. Circe held the lead — for now — and that was enough to pique the Johnwayne's interest.

They'd each had one first and one second place finish the day before, a fact which riled Elya just a bit; while the brunette had grown up poor enough that she was used to hand-me-downs and sharing, that had always applied to things and not the lead as she'd been forced to do with Circe Lyon. The other girl from her district, it seemed, felt similarly — Elya could feel the older girl's gaze on her. She looked up, meeting two meticulously made-up eyes with patch and pupil both.

"Going to make today interesting for me too?"

A smirk twisted over her face. "I make everything interesting," she retorted in reflex, a spark of mischief glinting off the hard steel of her one eye. She studied the blonde from toe to head — long legs all the way up to tired eyes. "But for you?" Her thin eyebrow shot up suggestively as her smirk turned wicked. "Find me later if it's interesting you want."

It seems that each task I must perform in search of my claim of first place is as similar to the last that there is no obvious reason why they are considered separate things. Discus and javelin tossing are so much alike I supposed that they must be equivalent. It seems not, sadly for me, or else I shouldn't have been forced to partake in both. Foolish as this endeavor was, I still aim to show my prowess. Alas is has come to my time to participate in this oddity once more. I shall demonstrate the lack of purpose in repetition.

The first words to come out of her mouth after event sign-ups all those weeks ago were "What the hell is a discus?" (If she's honest, she thought a Decathlon was just a bunch of running races. Sure, she thought, I can do that. Archery, running, my strong points.) Regret tastes funny as it wafts from her nervous stomach up to the top of her mouth. It gets even worse when she looks at the standings, and the cameras, and the ocean of supporters in the crowd.

Breathe, she thinks. It's like a bow and arrow - all the same, really. From one point to another. Clinical, unemotional. Aim, breathe, ignite, breathe, and-

She crosses her fingers and bites her lip and swallows her regret back down again.
