This was wrong.
Brody was sitting in one of the Peacekeeper cruisers, head leaned against the steering wheel and uselessly trying to prolong the inevitable. He had been running all over the precinct to make sure no one found out about Matthew's potentially fatal breach of contract, and had even allowed the alleged charge of trespassing to be handed off to some rookie to avoid raising suspicion.
He was exhausted. He was physically and emotionally drained. And he was being ordered to arrest and interrogate Matthew Dunham.
He'd only been in the cruiser for a few minutes, trying his best to work the details of this thing in his mind.
It could be worse. He thought, over and over again trying to convince himself, You could be arresting him about the kid. They won't hurt an Academy recruit over a trespassing charge.
Well... they might not hurt him much.
The Sergeant who was in charge of the case had been much more focused on Ruze, but for the sake of due diligence had allowed the trespassing claim to be processed; even he had been surprised when it came back stamped to be investigated. The decision to put Brody on the case had been very deliberate.
"He already knows you, and I imagine he trusts you. It'll be an easy day." Sergeant had said.
He didn't know the half of it.
With a heavy sigh, Brody put his helmet on. With the sunlight shining in through the windshield, the lens in his helmet was a dark tint, concealing most of his features (and the lines under his eyes from lack of sleep) and giving him a moment to collect his thoughts.
I just have to play this smart.
Easier said than done, considering the terms he and Matthew had parted on. Brody was too proud to admitout loud how much Matthew's decision to drop out had stung, but at this point he knew that trying to fight him on it would only waste more of energy. He didn't really have the heart for it anymore, anyway. Brody cared about the kid, that much was certain, but it wasn't just Matthew's time and effort that had been cast aside with his decision.
It was early in the morning, paired with the fact that it was a weekend, the streets were practically deserted; anyone who didn't have to be up, wasn't. Perfect; Brody didn't want this to draw any more attention than it had to. The only thing making him feel the slightest bit better right now was that he still had control over this mess, could still skate Matthew under the radar with minimal damage... The Dunham residence was equally peaceful, and as he parked the cruiser Brody sighed again, and against protocol removed his helmet as he came to the door.
He hoped Matthew would understand, as he knocked on the door, that Brody didn't want to do this.
An older man opened the door, who Brody could only assume was Matthew's father; he looked appropriately displeased both at his presence and the time he'd chosen to appear.
"I'm looking for Matthew Dunham."
