I'M WAKING UP TO ASH AND DUST
The entire world stopped moving the moment my life was handed over to the Capitol for the crime I had committed. Seconds dragged on forever leaving me alone in a world where nobody cared. The first few months were challenging, but it was adaptable. Every single a day my world was wiped clean of emotions because it was impossible to feel. Endless hours were spent earning hope from those around me. I watched how they worked, and eventually the life of an Avox became easier. Many masters wanted me because of my strength. Working in the fields back in district eleven definitely paid off although I want to go back home. It's horrible living away from home in a place where every single person hates me, yet this is my home now. I committed a crime, and now I must pay for all eternity.
Freedom didn't exist anymore. It never existed in the beginning when I was brought into this world, yet I had some, but now it's gone. Each second of everyday someone was watching me making sure the work was getting done, yet somehow I managed to escape. It wouldn't be long until my master saw I was missing, but for now it was time for some me time. I wanted to see if anyone else living here with the same punishment felt like getting away. Escaping would be near impossible, but it would be worth it especially if the peacekeepers shot and killed me. Death would take me out of this misery of serving the people who said they loved me; however, that was a lie. The Capitol wasn't capable of love as they loved watching people die. It's a sick reality, yet it was all anyone ever knew.
I left the house of my master without making a sound, yet I made sure a pencil and a piece of paper was in my pocket. Writing down the words I longed to speak was the only means of communication I had. Three long years has gone by since the voice was taken away. It was horrible at first, but the silence was welcomed. Being around people who had their tongue removed made my life way easier. Silence was deafening at first, yet it quickly changed. The only time the silence was broke was when the master was ordering me around. I hated him for the longest time, yet the longer I was here the easier it became. He was my family now along with the other Avox living here. He was the only person that was trustworthy; however, I kept my distance. It was impossible to know his true motives.
The entire weight of my body pressed against the banister as my eyes peered down at the lower level floor. A lot of work waited for my return, yet that was the farthest thing from my mind. I was tired of being bossed around by someone who thought they owned me. Maybe he does own me right now, but it won't be for long. A plan was in the making, and all I needed was a willing participant - another Avox - willing to risk his or her life to run away from this horrible place. My hands clasped tightly onto the marble railing out of fear of falling, but the banister was sturdy; I would know since I helped with the instillation. I inhaled sharply, and I listened to the sound of feet pounding against the floor. My only hope was it wasn't my master.
Today I was going to gain my freedom.
