Age: 20
Gender: Male
District/Area: 1/10 (Peacekeeper)
Appearance:
Standing at six feet even with a well-muscled body, Kristopher can come across as intimidating, especially when he forgets to smile. He usually remembers, though, and his smile is disarming, making him seem friendly even when he isn't remotely any such thing, and lighting up his cornflower-blue eyes. He radiates calm in most situations, and moves with natural agility. Kris is an expert at hiding negative emotions such as anger towards his superiors (or nervousness) that will not avail him anything positive.
Wearing his deep black hair short as per regulations, Kris seems paler than he is, with that dark hair. He comes across as being older than he is because he has such control over himself. When Kristopher wants to assert control, or outright scare someone, all he has to do is scowl, his black eyebrows coming towards each other as he does. In addition to his overall build, Kris' hands are large, and callused from his training.
Personality:
At one point in his life, Kristopher was, genuinely, the polite and obedient being he now seems to be. Among the decadent and selfish creatures of District 1, though spoiled by his parents, he was a smart and quiet boy who enjoyed school. Unfortunately, by third grade, he was being relentlessly bullied by his peers. Kris learned first of all to hide his emotions, a characteristic he still possesses. Then, he requested to be allowed to train as a tribute, a wish his influential and vainglorious parents willing granted; he never sincerely wanted to be a tribute, rather, Kris wanted to be trained to fight.
Among the pupils at the academy, Kristopher still somehow drew the bullies like moths to a flame, and he became ever more adept at showing nothing but a mild indifference. Kris was ten when he - radiating a calm that was unnatural in a small boy, and wearing a pleasant smile throughout - beat the living hell out of the worst of the bullies, a boy a year older than himself. From then on, he was willing to fight anyone, and do it in almost all cases without apparent anger, without despair when he lost, and without expressing glee when he won. This isn't to say that despite the slight smile on his lips, Kris wasn't vicious - he was, always fighting his hardest to triumph. Once he gained his size and, through hard effort, his physique, the bullies melted away to go torment and easier target, though Kristopher still has never really mastered the art of making a real friend. When he turned thirteen, Kris attracted the predatory attention of one of his instructors, and, desperately lonely though he would have died rather than admit it, Kris allowed the abuse to continue for three years until the man ceased being attracted to Kris now that he was 'too old.' As a result, he is deeply wary of persons in authority though he hides this very well from his superiors.
Kris never really wanted to volunteer for the Games, but, he would have done so if he had been told to do so, the same as he obeys orders that he disagrees with. Nonetheless, he was not disappointed to not be reaped. As an older teen and then as an adult, Kris was dissatisfied with the sybaritic lifestyle of his parents and peers, and finally he rebelled outwardly, seeking meaning (and a position where he could never be taken advantage of again) by signing up to be a Peacekeeper, something his parents could not understand, and were unhappy about. He does not, however, regret his decision; though often grim, and occasionally dangerous, he regards his job as preferable to living the life his parents live. A life with a purpose. Kris' desire to serve Panem is, however, genuine, and he is hard working to live up to the standards of excellence he has set for himself.
History:
Kristopher Alan Waite was born to Tansie and Alan Waite, wealthy do-nothings who, though they spoiled their son and loved him as best they could, were more concerned about their appearance in society than in child rearing, though two years later they had another child, a girl. They taught their offspring from a young age to be unfailingly polite and obedient when other people were about, though they could behave as they pleased when alone with their parents at home, good training for the duplicity of emotions that Kris mastered at an early age. Kris, unfortunately, never really got along with his younger sister - they would snipe at each other and fight over nothing.
Kris never told his parents he was being bullied, and they have always believed that his desire to be trained as a tribute was genuine: they used to boast frequently to acquaintances that their son was going to one day become a victor. They were genuinely disappointed that Kris was never chosen to volunteer, which bothered Kris when he was younger, but he has since come to accept that they couldn't help it. Still, since his joining the Peacekeepers, he has had only infrequent contact with his family, and, away from their influence, he feels better about himself and life than he ever has before. He never told anyone, either, about the abuse he suffered, considering it one more thing, like making friends, that he caused for himself.
Upon signing up for the Peacekeepers, Kris embraced the idea that here and now he had a genuine chance to recreate himself as the person that he wanted to grow up to be, and he threw himself into his training at boot camp with fervor that impressed his instructors. He found that, much as he had when he was a child, he secretly craved respect, but now, he could earn that respect rather than being continually denied it. This has spurred him to be unwilling to accept weakness, especially not in himself, nor to do less than a first-rate job. He is determined to be the best man and Peacekeeper he can be, and, though, inwardly, he is somewhat scared about his new (and first solo) assignment, he does not show that to anyone, able to maintain an admirable facade of cool calm even under stress, his long ago learned skills aiding him in appearing to be tough, logical, and always obedient to his superiors.
