tessa tristeThe sky looks like a painting today.
The fat clouds don't seem to move across the brilliant blue, no matter how far on Orion I ride. And it's been awhile; I started on the journey at dawn, and now the noon sun is beating on both of our backs. There's a feeling of bliss and calm, almost tangible, like an added smoothness to the air. I try to push all of my worries to the back of my mind; schoolwork, and the reaping that made my stomach turn inside out and back again. The ground goes by quickly, and the rhythmic sound of hooves pounding into the ground lulls me in its own sort of way. Like rain falling on a window. The only thing it does is create more noise, but still, its soothing.
There's a stream running in front of us, and I decide it's only fair that Orion gets a break. I pull gently on the reins, and he comes to an easy stop. He shakes his head and whinnies as I get off of his back. While he takes a drink, I stretch my legs and absentmindedly stroke his mane, coarse under my fingertips.
I hum under my breath a little and wander off. There isn't much shade to be offered, other than a pitiful shrub out in the open. I think I see tree in the distance, but it's too far for walking. I try to see if the brook leads anywhere, or to a larger water source, but to no avail. But I keep walking, enjoying the dirt crunch under my shoes. I know that once Orion is finished refreshing himself, he'll just come after me.
My eyes sweep over the horizon. What's in front of me is vast; there isn't too much to be seen. There's a a building silhouetted out in the distance, so I'll avoid going too far in that direction.
For a few minutes, I just close my eyes and soak in the sunlight. For the first time in a long time, the heat isn't unbearable. It's pleasant. A nice blend between summer and autumn.
I hear a few barks and snap my eyes back open again. Where's Orion? Slightly concerned, I turn around and see a large black blob and an even larger dust cloud running to the right of me.
Oh no.
I start sprinting after him, yelling his name, but he shows no intentions of slowing down. My feet sound loud as they slap across the, thankfully, flat ground. I keep shouting until my throat feels raw. "Orion! Orion stop!"
I squint off into the distance, my chest starting to hurt from shortness of breath. I think he's starting to slow down, thank Ripred, but there's still a lot of distance between him and me. I reduce my sprint to a jog. My legs are burning, and I'm only halfway to him, which is a little reminder that I'm out of shape. Maybe it was the drought.
Despite my heart beating against my ribcage and my lungs aching for air, I keep trotting, Orion's figure getting larger and larger in the distance.
