Ameline
Opening my eyes is the hardest part of waking up. A minute to realize I'm not sleeping anymore. Eight minutes to try to get comfortable again. Two minutes to lay there, waiting to fall back asleep. When its obvious I'm not going to get back to my dream, I open my eyes. First a crack, then all the way. Ten minutes to stare at the ceiling. With no window in my room to look outside, I turn my head towards the doorway. I can see into the living room, which is still dark. My eyes flick over to Abner's bed. Empty. It isn't yesterday anymore, because Abner is up. He would be outside right now, doing something productive, while I lay here. I close my eyes. I was just fine going back to sleep.
I open my eyes fifteen minutes later, but its too early in the morning for me to be happy about it. I don't want to chase after Abner today. Today, I want to lay in bed and sleep until tomorrow. Five minutes pass. I sigh, and turn on my side to get out of bed. I walk across the room, my hand sliding on the wall to steady myself. Just I'm entering the living room, I notice little rays of sunlight coming through the curtains. Instead of closing the curtains, I ignore it and take the backdoor to the barn.
I see Abner before he sees me. For a few seconds, I stand in the doorway rubbing my eyes. Usually, if I came out so early in the morning, I was fully awake. Today I was stumbling in. I knock on the wood a few times and wait for my brother to turn around. "Having fun?" I ask.
