Emery's heart was thundering like a stampede crashing through a forest. Her eyes were darting around wildly just like a beast in a frenzy. Sweat rained down her brow at a quicken rate. Her breaths were fast and as deep as possible. Her muscles screamed and ached just as though she had been on a twenty year long run. Ever her head was spinning as if caught in an unknown orbit. Everything was just crashing all around her, yet she kept on running. She knew she had to put as much distance between herself and her enemies as possible. Yet as she ran one image was burning bright in her mind. She watched as Esme's face light souly by fire strike her sending pain and flames upon her. For now Emery's adrenaline kept the pain at bay, but she knew that would end soon. So with what little time of partial ease she had it was spent focusing on Esme. Why would Esme attack attack do that? Weren't they suppose to be friends. What happened to the day they spent together painting in the Training Center? Friends weren't suppose to try to kill each other. Even if these are the... Emery's mind suddenly cut itself off as one realization came to play. These were the Hunger Games, everyone wants to survive. Even Esme, she attacked me before realizing it was me simply because she wanted to survive. She is just playing their game. Just as Emery was, they were both locked in like two people playing chess. A sigh of sadness rolled out of Emery's chest as her head now hung heavy. Her hand found the wall of the large cavern as she sat with her back against it. Now her arm was really screaming in pain, more pain than Emery had ever experienced. daringly she looked at it the best she could in the darkness. From what she could tell it was very blackened from the burn and hugely swollen. Not to mention she could hardly move it. Which meant that it had to be broken. Emery knew that was bad so she had to hold it in one fixed position. With a spark of idea Emery used her satchel's straps to wrap her arm softly and hold it in place. Lucky for her she could keep her now massively throbbing arm still and also continue to reach her satchel. With a shaken sigh Emery sat in the dark waiting for July to hopefully find her. Eventually she did creating s partial smile to form on Emery's worn out face. For a long period of time Emery just sat in the dark not daring to whisper a word. What if someone heard what if someone would try to kill them again... She just wanted to experience her agony alone in semi peace for the rest of the night. Luckily the anthem began blaring through the arena so Emery said quietly, "How are you July? I haven't been able to see how you have been fairing. Any serious injuries?" Just as she was about to listen for July's response the faces began. Emery's heart swayed slightly for Ryin who received the highest score of us all but now was dead. In fact, she was furious at her for leaving the rest of them in the bloodbath as she fought on her own. She was the cause of his death, of Kia's death. Her heart now ached of sorrow as his face shone brightly throughout the arena and tears began wallowing in her eyes. Shaking now she said softly to herself hoping in some twisted way he would hear, "Come back Kia, don't leave me. You promised to stay with me." Emery's hands now trembled until the anthem ended and her thoughts, now clouded, slightly shifted. She turned back to July who she still could barely see then whispered, "Can you take first watch? I just really need some time to rest this arm." Without really waiting for an answer Emery laid down against the cold stone floor. It wasn't comfortable but Emery was exhausted so she fell asleep in moments. Her dreams were filled with troubled scenes of screaming children covered in blood. Emery continued to watch as more and more of them fell before her eyes. Her heart hammered as July woke her up for her shift. Emery was nearly ready to leap from her skin, yet she contained herself as she watched and listened to the black around her and July. After what felt like plenty of hours sitting in pain and watching nothing, Emery shook July awake. Softly she spoke, "We should look for a way out of this cavern. I don't want to risk staying with the careers." Painfully Emery winced as she rose to her feet. With her broken arm searing still with pain, her and July began searching for an exit. Every step Emery took caused her arm to send shrills of pain throughout her. The pain was so awful Emery had begun biting down on her bottom lip. Surely enough after enough force she tasted blood in her mouth, but she kept biting. That was until they found a tunnel entrance in the cavern's wall. With little to no hesitation Emery said firmly, "In we go." Then entered the tunnel. It took only minutes to become completely lost as she walked on. In fact she actually had to stop several times to ensure July was still with her. The tunnel was so long and narrow Emery felt sorry for anyone with claustrophobia. Out of sheer luck she and hopefully her ally entered a new cavern. Still dark she couldn't see but at least it might not be the same place as before. Just as she was going to suggest they look around she heard something in the dark. Something coming towards them, an enemy. With her eyes wide her hands fumbled to grab her torch. She spent no time lighting it and readied herself for the incoming fight. | |
