It was my turn to watch last night. When it was finally over, I found a nice place to lay, and slept like a log. I had a rough day yesterday, but I was determined to make today better. I wanted to.
"Wake up, sunshine!" Merle says as he pokes me with his shotgun. "Shut up. I'll get up when I get up." I rub my eyes and I push myself up. This morning was a chilly one, but we've had a lot of cold mornings recently, so I don't really care. It helps a little to wake me up, gladly, as I become ever so slightly more alert. I help with breakfast and whatever needs to be done around camp.
Lori cooked up this morning's breakfast. Squirrel. Again? At least it's better than nothing. I sit in silence as I listen to the others conversations. I got sidetracked with all the diverse rainbow of leaves on the trees, from the bright reds to the dead browns. I can't believe it's this time again. It felt like yesterday it was mid-spring, with the mild heat and all the plants. It was going to be easier to see our targets, but on the downside, they'd see us just as easily.
Towards mid-day, I go out for a one-man hunting trip to go get food for lunch. I plan on getting a deer, but anything will do.
Then, probably out of prays, I hear a twig snap, and I instantly turn to the sound. Thank, God. Food. I raise my gun up and walk slowly towards it, trying to identify what I'm trying to shoot.
