Poppys hands carefully sketched the buck that had appeared in front of her, wanting to get the four crowned buck perfect as it nibbled some of the grass that grew beneath the forest floor. The nice thing about district seven was that it had many creatures still living in it that you wouldn't find in most districts. She sighed, the eraser making the mistake she'd made disappear before she fixed it, amazed at how the creature seemed to come alive in the sketch.
She sighed, looking down at her shadow as she noticed it had grown long in the light of the setting sun. How long have I been out here? she wondered, finally looking up at where the buck had once stood. It had vanished without a trace, leaving no indication besides some nibbled grass that it had ever been there.
She closed her sketchbook, closing her view of the buck from her eyes as she smiled, putting it into the small bag she'd always been seen carrying since her father gave it to her a few years back. She stood up, looking around to see where she was and was surprised to find that she was completely lost. She remembered following the buck when she'd found it and settling quietly when it had. For someone so much like a bird, she could focus on art like no one she knew, finding hours of joy in sitting still and sketching life going on around her.
She padded a few feet, wondering if anyone was still working who could help her find her way back home. Her eyes squinted in the dim light before she heard a branch break behind her and she looked back, seeing a figure but she couldn't make out who it was. "Who's there?" she called.
